Combining Physics and Art, UNS Student Won Second Place in Physic Comic Strip Competition

UNS — Excellent achievement is carved by students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. They are Michela Sheryl Noven and Margareta Aprilia Kusuma Dewi from the Statistics Study Program, alongside Helena Joan Noven from Environmental Science Study Program. The three succeeded in winning second place in Physic Comic Strip Competition (Phycotion) organized by Universitas Tanjungpura.

The competition requires participants to tell the physics phenomena in daily life through a creative comic strip. Following the theme determined by the organizer, the UNS team under Dra. Respatiwulan, M.Si., supervision brought up a comic strip entitled ‘Physics? For What?’. The comic tells the implementation of Physics on ballpoint products, explaining the surface tension principle and viscosity, which can be implemented to fix jammed ballpoint.

“We choose this theme because ballpoint is a familiar product, but many people do not know the physics concept implemented in the product, which actually is really simple,” Michela states when interviewed by uns.ac.id team on Sunday (25/03/21).

Collaboration between comics creation by Helena Joan Noven and Michela Sheryl Noven, combined with the excellent insight from Margareta Aprilia Kusuma Dewi in physics, brought the team to be the second place champion after competing with 30 participants from various communities.

Michela admits that her team did not expect to accomplish such an achievement. Previously, Michela and Helena Joan Noven, as the team leader, had participated in animation video competitions. The twins have also won various championships previously.

Joan dan Michela’s skills are started with their hobby of drawing. Michela reveals that she and her sister loves to draw when they are just a kid. However, in high school, Michela started to deepen her interest. Since then, Michela and Joan were actively participating in various competitions to improve their skills and experiences.

“We used to participate in many competitions because it can increase our experience. It’s ok if we did not win because every art can get improvements,” she added.

Michela believes that each creation has its own uniqueness. Therefore, never feel bad for our self-creation. Humas UNS
