UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Communication Expert, Rahmanto, shared tips for Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and General Election Commission (KPU) to gro political involvement among the young generation.
Dr. Andre asked the organizer of the General Election (Pemilu) to design a program that reflects the young generation’s priority who participate in the general election. The young generation needs facility and training, is encouraged to do action-oriented activities, and has a facility to connect with the political leader and the community. The fifth tip is to work in a multi-partisan setting and building support and consensus with political leaders and the community.
“The organizer needs to build the young generation pride for having something better than their fellows,” Dr. Andre stated in the Socialization of Participative Supervision “Building Collective Awareness on Political Participation” held by Bawaslu Tasikmalaya District on Tuesday (25/5/2021).
The webinar was held through the Tasikmalaya District YouTube channel. Dr. Andre mentioned that today’s young generation is not as apathetic as the previous years. Therefore, the efforts to build their political participation should be easier. This participation can be observed in their participation to reject the Cipta Kerja Bill, that event those of K-Pop lovers participate and showed their view on the bill. In front of the Chief of Bawaslu Tasikmalaya, Dr. Andre explained the factors that encourage young generation political participation. These factors are, for example, their political awareness, trust toward the government and political system, their political party selection, their selection of candidates for the legislative member, and their trust toward the post-election process.
Dr. Andre added that the most used political participation of the young generation is social media. This can be achieved through political information sharing on social media, posting online political messages, participating in online political discussions, and liking political posts.
“Our fellows in the social media has high hope as a participative public space and its characteristics. Social media allow people to create content or the user-generated content,” he concluded. Humas UNS
