Turning Waste into Fish Feed, FT UNS Students Win National Competition

UNS – Three students from the Chemical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won second place in the Infinite Entrepreneurship 2023 Creative Business Competition. The students, Afrianto Bayu Setyono, Adelia Yuniati, and Priyanka Khansa Insyira, are currently in their final semester.

This national-level business plan competition was held online by the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) on September 10, 2023. The competition saw participation from 45 teams representing various universities across Indonesia.

Adelia and her team presented a business idea focusing on creating fish feed products from tofu waste and fish by-products, supplemented with ingredients such as blood meal and duckweed.

“The goal is to reduce the cost of fish feed, especially in Indonesia, as fish feed is currently relatively expensive with a standard protein content. The idea we propose can reduce costs while maintaining high protein levels. This is because the fish waste content can increase the protein value,” Adelia explained as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id, Thursday (5/10/2023).

This idea was born out of the fact that fish feed prices are currently high, with a standard protein content. Furthermore, tofu waste is abundant, so they aimed to support the anti-food loss and waste (FLW) movement. Moreover, the high rate of stunting due to insufficient protein consumption formed the basis for creating fish pellets to increase the protein content of fish feed, ultimately increasing the protein content in the fish.

Through this business idea, they earned the title of runner-up in the competition. When announced as the second-place winners, they expressed their immense joy and admitted they had not anticipated this victory.

“We didn’t expect this because the selection process was very lengthy. Additionally, during the final presentation, the judges’ questions were unexpected, so our team had lost hope, thinking we would not win. However, it turns out we managed to secure second place. We are very grateful,” she said.

Through this achievement, they hope to participate in other competitions during the remainder of their academic year, as they are currently in their final semester.

“At present, we are in our final year of study, so we hope to be able to participate in more competitions in the future, perhaps one or two. Besides filling our spare time, we also want to gain valuable experiences that we can cherish. Hopefully, this can also motivate our fellow UNS students,” Adelia concluded. HUMAS UNS
