UNS – Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA., a lecturer at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, recently served as a keynote speaker at the Surakarta City Sectoral Statistics Authorization event on Wednesday (10/2/2024). The event, titled “Data Statistik Sektoral untuk Mengukur Kebijakan Pemerintah” (Sectoral Statistical Data for Measuring Government Policy), was organized by the Surakarta City Government, which invited Dr. Sutanto to discuss the critical role of statistical data in forming effective government policies.

The presentation by Dr. Sutanto, a lecturer in the Mathematics Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), was attended by Surakarta’s Regional Secretary and the heads of several local government organizations (OPD) in Surakarta. During his session, Dr. Sutanto emphasized the need for precise and relevant statistical data to assess the effectiveness of government policies and support evidence-based policy planning for sustainable development.

“Cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure that the data collected is processed and analyzed optimally, producing targeted policy recommendations,” Dr. Sutanto said.

Following the event, the Mathematics Program is planning to establish collaborations with several local government departments in Surakarta. This initiative aligns with the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program at UNS, offering students valuable hands-on opportunities. The partnership aims to involve students in data processing and analysis projects within the government sector.

Through this program, students will engage in activities centered around data analysis and data science, assisting departments in managing statistical data critical to their operations. The initiative is expected to provide students with practical experience that strengthens their competencies in data science while allowing them to contribute meaningfully to the development of more effective and efficient local policies. In this way, UNS’s Mathematics Program continues to advance students’ skills in data science and foster beneficial collaborations with key stakeholders, including the Surakarta City Government.

Besides the discussions, the event also served to recognize OPDs that have excelled in statistical data management in Surakarta. Three departments—Surakarta City Health Office, Surakarta City Housing and Settlement Office, and the Population and Civil Registration Office (Disdukcapil) of Surakarta—received awards for their outstanding statistical data management systems. The awards aim to inspire other departments to enhance their data management quality, ultimately contributing to more structured and measurable regional development.
