UNS — The National Library of Indonesia (PNRI), in collaboration with the Socio-Economic Laboratory of the Faculty of Animal Science at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, the Alumni Association of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (KAUNSOED) Solo Raya, and the Indonesian Association of Socio-Economic Animal Scientists (PERSEPSI) Solo Raya, successfully held the 1st Indonesian Green Library Conference (KPHI) 2024. The event took place at the Al-Mumtazah Sharia Hotel Ballroom, Surakarta, from October 29 to November 1, 2024. The theme for this inaugural conference was “The Role of Green Libraries in Supporting Sustainable Development Based on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
The 1st KPHI 2024 aimed to provide a platform for sharing experiences, knowledge, advice, and guidelines on the implementation, utilization, transformation, and role of green libraries in promoting sustainable development through the application of SDGs.
The event featured various activities, including a National Seminar, the 1st National Work Meeting of the Indonesian Green Library and Literacy Movers Association (APPeL Hijau Indonesia) for the 2024-2028 period, the 7th National Essay Writing Competition, a Call for Papers on the theme of green libraries, and a city tour field trip. The Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UNS, Prof. Ir. Lilik Retna Kartikasari, M.P., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., officially opened the conference.
The keynote speakers at the 1st KPHI 2024 included: Drs. Nurcahyono, S.S., M.Si., Head of the Education and Training Center at the National Library of Indonesia, who presented a paper on “Realizing the Role of Green Libraries Based on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”; Dr. Ir. Ayu Intan Sari, S.Pt., M.Sc., a socio-economic lecturer at the Faculty of Animal Science UNS, discussed “Utilizing Green Libraries as Reference and Learning Resources for Community Empowerment in Indonesia”; Dr. Wiji Suwarno, S.PdI., S.IPI., M.Hum., a lecturer from the Library and Information Science Program at UIN Salatiga and former Head of FPPTI Central Java (2017-2023), delivered a presentation on “The Urgency of Green Libraries Amid Social, Cultural, Economic, Science, and Technological Changes”; and Khusnun Nadhifah, S.Kom., M.M., Head of the Library Unit at the University of Jember, presented a paper titled “The Role of Librarians in Developing Green Libraries Based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
The conference attracted 50 participants and guests, including officials from central and regional levels, representatives from library and archival agencies, lecturers, teachers, students, researchers, green literacy enthusiasts, librarians, and library managers from across Indonesia.
Achmad Nur Chamdi, S.Pt., M.Si., the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, highlighted several significant recommendations and decisions resulting from the conference. “There were 15 key recommendations from this conference,” Achmad noted.
Those key recommendations are: establishment of the Indonesian Green Library and Literacy Movers Association (APPeL Hijau Indonesia); formulation of the vision and mission of APPeL Hijau Indonesia; adoption of the APPeL Hijau Indonesia logo; introduction of the APPeL Hijau Indonesia anthem; encouragement of volunteer and community involvement in promoting green library initiatives at the local community level such as neighborhood associations (RT/RW); promotion of APPeL Hijau Indonesia activities through various media channels, including print, electronic, and social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube, for better outreach and public engagement, recognition and awards for libraries that have successfully implemented the green library concept based on established indicators; proposal to establish regional associations at the provincial and city or district levels once the central organization is well-established; collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia to allocate a specific budget for green library development and partnerships with NGOs and private sector CSR programs; recommendations for collaboration with the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas RI to implement sustainable development through green library initiatives aligned with the 17 SDG goals; registration of the association with a notary to secure legal status; verification of the association’s logo and name with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to prevent duplication; formulation of the Articles of Association (AD/ART) of APPeL Hijau Indonesia; development of programs supporting the growth of green libraries in Indonesia; and due to the lack of a confirmed host city for the next conference, it was decided that the 2nd KPHI in 2025 will again be held in Surakarta, Central Java.
This conference marks a significant step toward promoting the role of green libraries in sustainable development and community empowerment, setting the foundation for future initiatives in environmental literacy and sustainable library management in Indonesia.
