UNS The Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek RI) has honored Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta as a globally accomplished university. UNS Surakarta has achieved global recognition for its accomplishments. This recognition highlights UNS’s commitment to advancing world-class education and research.

Kemendiktisaintek RI honored UNS alongside several other Indonesian universities. These universities secured positions in the Top 500 of the QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject 2025. The award ceremony took place on Thursday (20/3/2025) at the ministry’s auditorium in Jakarta. The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., personally presented the award. He handed it to Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information at UNS.

UNS’s Growing Global Recognition

UNS has shown significant progress, with several academic disciplines achieving global rankings. This milestone underscores the university’s increasing international recognition in academics and research.

Furthermore, this recognition follows the recent QS WUR by Subject rankings released on March 12, 2025. According to the report, five UNS academic disciplines secured global standings, with three ranking in the Top 500 worldwide. Those are:

  • Economics & Econometrics: Ranked 301-350 globally.
  • Accounting & Finance: Ranked 301-375 globally.
  • Agriculture & Forestry: Ranked 401-475 globally.
  • Arts & Humanities: Positioned 501-550 globally.
  • Business & Management Studies: Ranked 601-650 globally.

The Importance of Global University Rankings

Prof. Dr. Khairul Munadi, S.T., M.Eng., Director-General of Higher Education at Kemendiktisaintek RI, emphasized the importance of university rankings. He stated that they serve as a crucial indicator of an institution’s global performance. He also noted that rankings not only acknowledge academic achievements but also enhance the international reputation of Indonesian universities.

“University rankings shape global perceptions of our higher education institutions. Currently, seven academic disciplines from Indonesian universities are ranked in the Top 100 of the QS WUR by Subject. This reflects Indonesia’s growing academic and research excellence,” Prof. Khairul stated.

He further explained that the QS WUR by Subject rankings assess universities based on several key factors. It includes:

  • Academic and Employer Reputation
  • H-Index Institution
  • Citation of Papers
  • International Research Network

“While rankings are not the ultimate goal, they remain an essential benchmark for research quality in higher education. These achievements strengthen institutional reputation and foster strategic partnerships. They also open opportunities for global collaboration with research institutions and industries,” he added.

Minister’s Appreciation for UNS’s Achievement

Minister Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., praised UNS and other universities for their remarkable global rankings. He emphasized that these successes are the result of collective efforts from university leadership, faculty members, students, and administrative staff.

“These rankings prove that our universities are on par with international institutions. Our lecturers and researchers are as excellent as those abroad,” Prof. Brian stated.

UNS’s success in the global rankings marks a significant milestone in enhancing academic competitiveness. It also solidifies the university’s position on the international stage. This achievement inspires continuous innovation in education and research. It also aligns with the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4): Ensuring Quality Education.
