UNS — Numerous achievements are carved by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) of Badminton, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. Both at regional or national, under the individual and team numbers. One of the excellent achievements was accomplished by Anggepy Mulan Sari, a student of Physical Education, Health and Recreation (PJKR) Faculty of Sport (FKOR) year of 2018.

The student who was born on Gunung Kidul compete in the women class at various championships such as Liga Mahasiswa (LIMA), Sebelas Maret Cup, UGM Cup, Pekan Olahraga Mahasiswa Provinsi (Pomprov) and Pekan Olahraga Mahasiswa Nasional (Pomnas), bringing home multiple wins. Anggepy’s achievements are, among others, Third place in Women single category and Team Mixed-Double Category in UGM Cup 2018, Third place in Women Single and First place in Women Double category in LIMA Regional DIY-Jawa Tengah 2019, Third place in Mixed Double category Sebelas Maret Cup 2019, Second place in Women Single category in Pomprov Jawa Tengah 2019, Third place in Team Women Single category Pomnas 2019, Second place in Women Single and Third place in Team Mixed Double category in UGM Cup 2019, as we as Third place in Women Single and Second place in Team Women Single category in LIMA 2020.

Her First Love Badminton

Anggepy started to love badminton since she was in Elementary School, where she represented her school in a Regional Sports Week (Popda) and succeeded in reaching the Provincial level. Supported by her parents, who have pursued badminton sports earlier than her, Anggepy knows badminton since she was little. Moreover, when she was in Elementary School she already joined a Badminton Association (PB) of Perkumpulan Masyarakat Surakarta (PMS). This activity continued when she was in Junior High School. While in Senior High School, she joined the Student Education and Training Center (PPLP) Jawa Tengah.

Family Support

In her badminton career, family support is crucial for Anggepy. Both of her parents are always supportive in every match. Both parents were also pursuing a sports career in soccer and volleyball. “My family supports me greatly, especially because this is a non-academic field. But, they also support me to advance in the academic field. This support is one of my motivations,” said the winning daughter.

On a certain occasion, her competitor often got the upper hand at the beginning of a game, but Anggepy always does her best to close the gap. “There was a time when the score gap is quite wide. Back then, I was in my period, so the mood was not positive for me. But I was reminded that my parents were watching because the match in LIMA was broadcasted online through Youtube, so I was motivated to never disappoint them. I have to do my best to give the best,” she recounted.

Further, Anggepy reveals that she also faces some boredom because of her monotonous daily routine. “There was a time when I was bored and down because of the requirements to train every day, not to forget the lectures and other activities. But all of that is my responsibility, so I have to be better at managing my time. Feeling tired is normal, but we must give our best. It’s okay to fail, but do not give. Enjoy and be grateful for the process,” she reveals.

Other than support from her family, she also receives much supports from her university friends and UNS. She reveals that UNS gives excellent support for all of its athletes who compete at LIMA Badminton. This support also motivates her to give her best.

Most Memorable Moment

One of the most memorable moments for Anggepy is the LIMA 2019 Semifinal because she must go against her senior in the semifinal. This match brings her to be the Third champion in LIMA 2019 and 2020, where she must face her own colleagues in final or semifinal rounds. However, all of her achievements deserve praise, especially with strong rivals from other universities, which encourage her to always  ready for every match.

Time Management

Majoring in Sports requires great time management for all of its students. Great time management is essential to avoid burnout, especially for students who attempt to be athletes. This condition will be a special challenge for students like Anggepy. “Managing time and allocating them wisely, we must know and set our priorities right. Between my study and training also need to be balanced. As for me, I choose to limit spending time with my friends,” she admits.

Favorite Athlete

People are idolizing their role models because of their achievements or kindness. This is also the case for Anggepy in idolizing the Gold Medal Holder of the Rio Olympiad 2016, Liliyana Natsir. The reason is that the said role model can protect their partner during a match and because of their patience during the match. “Cik Butet (Natsir’s nickname) is really friendly, and she plays excellently. I met her once during the Pomnas Jakarta 2019 and was invited to hang out together. As for the women single, my favorite is Susi Susanti,” Anggepy explains while praising her favorite athletes.

Concluding the interview, Anggepy advised UNS students who have a hobby of playing badminton to join the UNS UKM badminton. “If anyone loves to play badminton, they are welcome to join the UKM. There we can learn, train, and share. Of course, we are learning from scratch, not an instant process. All is step by step. Or you can follow our Instagram at @ukmbulutangkisuns, or my Instagram @mulananggepy_1204,” Anggepy, who currently serves as the Head of UNS UKM Badminton, concluded.

Hopefully, all of her achievements will motivate UNS students to strive for greater achievement and never give up. Humas UNS
