UNS – The Art Creation Research Group (RG) from the Fine Arts Program at the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an art exhibition titled “Kisah Seribu Candi” (The Tale of a Thousand Temples). The exhibition took place at the Solo Is Solo Gallery for three days, from Saturday (28/9/2024) to Monday (30/9/2024).
The exhibition aimed to empower fine arts and open up new opportunities for art creation with a broader impact, drawing inspiration from the local genius found in the Sewu Temple complex.
“Through the Art Creation RG, academic artists can contribute to growing public appreciation for a local genius like Sewu Temple. This way, the temple is not just seen as a tourist destination, an ancient building artifact, or a heritage conservation site. Still, as an integral part of the surrounding community,” Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, S.Sn., M.Sn., a member of the Art Creation RG, explained, as quoted by uns.ac.id on Tuesday (1/10/2024).
The exhibition showcased various sculptures, temple structures, and relief drawings. There were also various works, including ceramics, sculptures, and paintings that were adaptations or interpretations of the Sewu Temple reliefs.
“The adaptation as an effort to explore or interpret the Sewu Temple reliefs is reflected in the paintings, ceramics, graphics, and sculptures. These adaptations are presented in both three-dimensional and two-dimensional forms. These works are the result of prior research conducted at Sewu Temple,” Dyah added.
The three-day “The Tale of a Thousand Temples” exhibition attracted enthusiastic visitors from various backgrounds. This success highlights the Art Creation RG’s ability to introduce local culture to a wider audience as part of efforts to enhance appreciation for local genius,” she said.
The Art Creation RG from the Fine Arts Program at FSRD UNS includes members such as Prof. Dr. Narsen Afatara, M.S., Prof. Dr. Agus Purwantoro, M.Sn., Dr. Sigit Purnomo Adi, S.Sn., M.Sn., Dyah Yuni Kurniawati, S.Sn., M.Sn., Dr. Sn. Dona Prawita Arissuta, S.Sn., M.Hum., Mif Yasmin ‘Azizah As Sakini, Nurohman, Nurokhim, Vito Ariyanto, Nikmah Nurlaila, and Yunan Pramudita Alan Nugraha.
