Consul General of the Chinese Embassy in Surabaya Inaugurates the UNS China Center to Strengthen Their International Partnership

Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Surabaya have further strengthened their international partnership with the inauguration of the UNS China Center. The inauguration was held on the 4th floor of the UNS Library Building on Wednesday (14/5/2025) and attended by the Consul General of the Chinese Embassy in Surabaya, Mr. Xu Yong.

This inauguration was organized by the UNS Chinese Language Center, also known as the Confucius Institute at UNS, to strengthen the collaboration between UNS and Xihua University, China, which has been active for more than seven years. UNS Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., as well as deans, directors, and heads of units within UNS, also attended the inauguration.

Virtual Remarks from Prof. Jin Min

Joining the inauguration virtually via Zoom, Prof. Jin Min, the Party Committee Secretary and Vice Rector of Xihua University, warmly congratulated the establishment of the UNS China Center. In her remarks, she pointed out 2025 as a significant momentum, marking the 75 years of the diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China. She also emphasized that the collaboration between the two universities has been active across various fields, including education, culture, science and technology, and industrial research development.

“Today’s inauguration indicates a new milestone in developing pragmatic cooperation between Xihua University and UNS. The establishment of the China Center serves as a new starting point for a more comprehensive and multidimensional collaboration in the future,” she said.

UNS China Center for Strengthening Partnership

Representing the Rector of UNS, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, expressed that establishing the China Center is a tangible realization of the strategic partnership between UNS and Xihua University. He also appreciated the continued support of the Chinese Embassy in Surabaya for the Confucius Institute program at UNS.

“Hopefully, with the Confucius Institute and the China Center, the partnership can thrive and bring benefits, not only to the UNS academic community but also to strengthen Indonesia-China friendship in the coming years.” Prof. Irwan added.

The inauguration concluded with a group photo session and a Studium Generale in Meeting Room 2 of the dr. Prakosa Building at UNS. The Studium Generale began with a traditional dance performance by Chinese Bridge student participants and continued with a welcome speech from Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.

On this occasion, Mr. Xu Yong delivered a public lecture on developing Indonesia-China relations and opportunities for cooperation in higher education. The event ran smoothly and warmly, marking a crucial moment in strengthening UNS international academic relations. This event also aimed to contribute to achieving the seventeenth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): Partnerships for the Goals.
