UNS – The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) International Office, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on ‘Design of STEM Lesson Plan’, Tuesday (16/6/2020) through Zoom Meeting and live streaming in International Office FKIP UNS Youtube Channel.
The webinar invites two speakers namely Prof. Dr. Sittichai Wichaidit from Thammasat University Thailand and Prof. Dr. Patcharee R. Wichaidit from Thepsatri Rajabhat University. The discussion was led by Murni Ramli, S.P., M.Si., Ed.D, Deputy of International Office UNS. This webinar assists participants to design Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) for the learning plan that will be implemented during lectures.
Prof. Sittichai explains the definition of STEM, “STEM is an integrated learning approach that links two or more STEM content and skills to solve problems in a real-world condition.”
Both speakers interchangeably and continuously encourage the participants to actively involved by giving a worksheet that can be filled by the participants as an exercise. The participants were given 10 minutes to finish the worksheet, when the time is up, several participants are requested to present their result which immediately evaluated by Prof. Sittichai and Prof. Patcharee.
A teacher has to understand several matters before establishing a STEM design in a Course Plan. They need to understand the interesting keywords within a situation or event. What main problems can be solved using STEM knowledge and skills, and then, what kind of learning outcomes are expected. They also need to know the type of learning procedure that can encourage students to solve problems.
Moreover, teachers need to need to pay attention to any assessment tools or techniques used for gathering the learning proof, as well as any context contained in an instruction. Designing STEM in a course plan should be done carefully and cautiously in order to avoid miscommunication or any matters that are difficult to be understood by the students.
