UNS – Four lecturers from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta have been listed in the 2024 World’s Top 2% Scientist, released by Elsevier and Stanford University. The four UNS lecturers include Prof. Ir. Agung Tri Wijayanta, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Engineering (FT); Dr. Ir. Wakhid Ahmad Jauhari, S.T., M.T., also from FT; Dr. Eng. Nugroho Agung Pambudi, M.Eng., from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP); and Dr. Ir. Aditya Rio Prabowo, S.T., M.T., M.Eng., from FT. They are part of the 100.000 top scientists worldwide, with 150 being from Indonesia.
Prof. Agung Tri Wijayanta, a professor in Mechanical Engineering at FT UNS, specializes in heat transfer and thermal engineering. He earned his Ph.D. and M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Kyushu University, Japan. His work in heat transfer is widely recognized and has been published internationally. In 2023 alone, he published 20 articles in indexed international journals, contributing to a total of 75 articles over the past decade. He also published six indexed conference proceedings this year, part of a total of 38 since 2015.
Dr. Wakhid, a lecturer in the Industrial Engineering Program at FT UNS, serves as the program’s head. He completed his undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies at the Industrial Engineering Department, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya. His research focuses on supply chain inventory management. Since 2023, he has published seven articles in indexed international journals, with 51 articles published over the last 10 years. He also contributed to 11 conference proceedings this year, part of 54 articles published since 2015.
“One of my most special articles was published in the top-tier Journal of Cleaner Production, a collaboration with students and researchers from Malaysia and India,” Dr. Wakhid shared.
Dr.Eng. Aditya Rio Prabowo is an expert in impact engineering, marine architecture, and maritime accident investigations. He also researches structural impact resilience in ships and marine structures. Dr. Aditya earned his Ph.D. in Marine Convergence Design from Pukyong National University, South Korea. In 2023, he published 53 articles in indexed international journals, contributing to a total of 139 articles over the past six years. He also published 37 indexed conference proceedings this year, part of 77 since 2019.
Dr.Eng. Nugroho Agung Pambudi, a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Education Program at FKIP UNS, is being recognized in the World’s Top 2% Scientist list for the second time, with his first recognition in 2021. He earned his Dr.Eng. in Earth Resources from Kyushu University and specializes in energy conversion, particularly in energy efficiency and analysis in power generation systems. His expertise extends to renewable energy technologies such as geothermal, biomass, and solar water heating systems. In 2023, he published nine articles in indexed international journals, part of 59 articles over the last decade, with two conference proceedings published this year, adding to 40 since 2016.
“Yes, this is my second time. I received this recognition in 2021 as well. This recognition is purely based on academic achievements, measured by scientific publications and their impact on the global academic community,” Dr. Nugroho said.
The World’s Top 2% Scientist list is compiled by researchers from Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier and SciTech Strategies. The ranking is based on several key factors, including cumulative citations, H-index, and citations per paper. The list is derived from data provided by Scopus, one of the world’s largest research databases, which tracks scientific publications, citation counts, and other metrics that assess the impact of researchers’ work.
*UNS Supports Researchers*
To uns.ac.id, in response to the recognition, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Rachmi Handayani, S.H., M.M., Head of the UNS Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), praised the achievements of the UNS lecturers in receiving the prestigious World’s Top 2% Scientist recognition. This highlights that UNS lecturers have gained international recognition.
“We believe that many more of our lecturers and researchers at UNS have the potential to join the ranks of the world’s top scientists. This motivates LPPM to devise strategies and programs that will further elevate achievements and inspire UNS lecturers, researchers, and students on the global stage,” Prof. Ayu stated on Thursday (26/7/2024).
The Dean of FT UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyudi Sutopo, S.T., M.Si., IPU, emphasized that this recognition reflects the global impact of UNS researchers, measured by their research productivity, citation counts, and the influence of their work in various fields.
“This is a tremendous source of pride. It shows that the research conducted by these lecturers has a significant global impact,” Prof. Wahyudi stated on Friday (27/9/2024).
The selection process for top scientists is based on research performance and scientific publications. LPPM UNS continues to provide support for research and international publications. In 2024, UNS allocated approximately IDR 45 billion in internal funds for research and community service. Additionally, there are publication grants and incentives for lecturers who successfully publish in reputable international journals.
*Contribution to Performance Indicators*
The recognition of UNS lecturers in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list contributes directly and indirectly to the achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Directly, it fulfills KPI 5, which focuses on academic work being recognized internationally. Indirectly, this recognition supports KPI 3 (lecturers’ involvement in activities outside the campus), KPI 6 (program collaboration with world-class partners), and KPI 8 (internationally recognized programs).
