FT UNS Announces The Winner of Greening Our Campus Competition

UNS — The Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta announces the winner of Greening Our Campus Competition, Saturday (5/12/2020). This competition aims to realize a green campus in FT UNS. The competition that encompasses all students’ ideas and innovations to contribute to the green governance and behavior in FT UNS, announces the 6 best teams.

The first winner for the competition is the Automatic Sorting Bin, an innovation by Alberto Setiawan (Mechanical Engineering), Kristian Harris (Civil Engineering), Naufal Nur Saifullah (Mechanical Engineering), dan Rainy Sasanti Ramadhiani (Civil Engineering). The automatic sorting bin can identify organic and non-organic waste to facilitate the recycling process and support the Green Campus Program in FT UNS.

“Automatic Sorting Bin is a technological concept that assists in waste sorting. The way it is working is, when someone throws garbage in the Automatic Sorting Bin, the device will scan the waste and sort out the waste accordingly,” explains the PR of the team, Sahda, Thursday (17/12/2020). Later on, the scanned waste will be sorted into different bins, to help with the recycling process. Automatic Sorting Bin will be located in certain places, especially in FT UNS, thus helping the one collecting waste to sort the waste for the appropriate landfill.

The second winner, with an article entitled “Re-Using Plastic Waste as Eco-Brick” and “Pyrolysis Technology to Transform Plastic Waste Into Fuel,” by Siti Devi Oktavia. The student of Urban and Regional Planning Study Program (PWK) FT UNS explains that the reuse of plastic waste into Eco-Brick aims to utilize the plastic waste from all around FT UNS as a brick replacement.

“The Eco-Brick production process is easy. First, students only need to collect plastic waste and sort them into two categories, the plastic bottle, and smooth plastic waste,” Siti explains.

As for her second innovation entitled “Pyrolysis Technology to Transform Plastic Waste Into Fuel,” Siti explains that this innovation intended to establish students’ collaboration in creating plastic waste processing tools/machines using the pyrolysis method. “Pyrolysis method is a chemical decomposition method from an organic material, which takes place without air or oxygen. Through a preliminary research and product design on the work system of the equipment planned,” Siti explains.

In the third place, there is Afiq Ramadhan and Hasna Haura Taqiyyah (Architectural Engineering Study Program) with “Evo Card, An Artificial Intelligence-Based Smart Card to Reduce Electrical Waste in the Faculty of Engineering”. Afiq states that Evo Card has a similar function with the student card, but with several innovations.

“This card used to turn the electricity on and off. The card will be connected with an application, which can be downloaded from GooglePlay, and UNS Big Data storage,” Afiq explains. He further added that the card also connected to a certain tool in each classroom, which also connected to the main switch. Once the card was inserted into the slot, it will turn the electricity on and turning it off when the card is removed.

Besides the winners, FT UNS also determines the ‘Onthel Point’ innovation as the First Runner-up, Gallon of Honesty as Second Runner-up, and Paper Corner: Keep Your Waste Paper as the Third Runner-up. Humas UNS
