UNS – The Green Earth Program Research Group of Geography Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducted a community service program in Dayu Village, Gondangrejo Subdistrict, Karanganyar District, Thursday (23/7/2020). The Research Group shared a Multi-risk disaster map of Dayu Village and hand washing equipment for the village.
The leader of the program, Dr. Rita Noviani, S. Si, M. Sc stated that Dayu Village is one of the villages in Karanganyar which has a multi disaster risk including flood, landslide, and drought. Based on Village Potential data in 2018, Dayu Village experiences floods and landslide every year, particularly in two hamlets, Dayu and Tanjung. According to the information gathered from the local community, there have been no disaster mitigation programs disseminated to them. The program in Dayu Village is funded through Research Group Grant (HRG) from the Institute for Research and Community Engagement (LPPM) UNS.
Dr. Rita added that the program aims to improve community awareness and preparedness in facing a natural disaster, to introduce ways to map participation in local hazards such as floods, landslides and droughts, and to strengthen community ability in mitigating disaster by establishing a partnership with concerned institutions.
The Research Groups shared material concerning the introduction of Dayu Village area which brings potential disasters. The team also shared material on how to read google earth image to explain to the villagers that they live in disaster-prone areas. Villagers from two hamlets were invited as a participant in an FGD facilitated by Faculty Member from Geography Education FKIP UNS to conduct a participative mapping in determining the locations that are prone to floods and landslide, and the locations that are safe to be set as a muster point during a disaster.
The participants were invited to take part in installing signposts for muster point and evacuation route. The village chief of Dayu Village, M. Agus Susilo welcomed the community service program from the Green Earth Program Research Group of Geography Education Program FKIP UNS, and wish that the program will bring benefits for the villagers and add insight related to disaster preparedness.
