KKN UNS Student Assisted Local Community Producing Hand Sanitizer with Pedal System and IT Training in Cilacap

UNS — Students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in their online and offline Student Community Service Program (KKN) Danasri Lor Village, Nusawungu Subdistrict, Cilacap District assisted the villagers in producing hand sanitizer with pedal system and Information Technology (IT) training.

Team 20 KKN UNS, under the supervision of their field supervisor (DPL), Yayan Suherlan, S.Sn., M.Sn produced the hand sanitizer with a pedal system to reduce contact with hand sanitizer bottle, which often become a medium for Sars-Cov-2 spread. “This hand sanitizer uses a pedal system to squeeze the liquid without touching the bottle,” a member of Team 20 KKN UNS, Hafidz, explained.

In a written description received by uns.ac.id on Tuesday (23/2/2021), Hafidz said that the team used pipes and adhesive in the production process to cut costs. They produced ten units of hand sanitizer with pedal installed in every Posyandu and Danasri Lor Village Hall. The team produced hand sanitizer using easily obtained compositions such as alcohol 96%, hydrogen peroxide 10%, glycerin, carbomer, tritanol amine, propylene glycol, and distilled water. “We also produced refill for hand sanitizer in 500 ml bottle,” Yanuar Bekti Ramadhan, another team member, stated.

The Chemical Engineering Program student, the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, explained that alcohol higher alcohol concentration (> 90%) is used to increase hand sanitizer’s effectiveness in killing viruses and bacteria. Yanuar added that their innovation is a vital program considering low villagers’ awareness toward health protocols. Based on his observation, community cleanliness, mainly to wash hands, is lacking. This behavior is caused by the water shortage and people’s unwillingness to queue in washbasin to wash their hands.

Team 20 KKN UNS also prepared other programs such as designing Danasri Lor village’s embung ecotourism site plant, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint training, creating a village garden, and providing study assistance for students. All of which yield positive responses from the Chief of hamlet, Sidadi, who thanked the students.

“I am impressed with the creativity of KKN students for creating hand sanitizer with the pedal system. The distribution is timely because posyandu activity will be conducted the following day. I also hope that this hand sanitizer production will help in preventing Covid-19,” Sidadi said. Humas UNS
