UNS – The public lecture at Building 3, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Monday (01/09/2019) focused on the culture of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the campus environment. This public lecture invited the Head of Occupational Safety and Health Department Universitas Indonesia (UI), Indri Hapsari Susilowati, Ph.D. as the speaker.

In her presentation, Susilowati said that the awareness to implement OSH was very necessary because accidents could occur anywhere and anytime, including in the educational institutions. She then gave some examples of work accident cases occurred in the campus such as fires due to short circuits of electricity, an explosion of chemical reactions, food poisoning, and buildings collapsing.

“Don’t wait for an accident to occur just to realize the importance of OSH because it will be a matter of consideration for parents to enroll their children into the educational institution,” she explained.

She continued, OSH played an important role in creating a safe and healthy environment. The entire academic communities can work and study comfortably if the environment is safe. The work productivity will also increase.

To make OSH as a culture, Susilowati added, the campus needs to arrange a Safety and Health Management System (SHMS). SHMS includes the guidelines for implementing OSH. Therefore, the risk management, the organizational systems, and a regulation require to be considered.

She explained, the risk management concerned on reducing the level of work danger and accidents that might occur.

Risk management is not only about the measurement of the risks, but also the control of the accidents.

Then, OSH also demands to be applied organizationally to make it well-systemized. “OSH policy is a commitment from the top management (executive officers) to the workers’ safety and health. Thus, the OSH must be in line with management, for example, if one faculty gets OSHMS (Occupational Safety and Health Management System) certificate from the rector, the other faculties will also be induced to get it,” this alumni of Kyushu University Japan said.

Finally, she said that making SHMS should follow the existing regulation. One of them is the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 50 of 2012 concerning the Implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Management System.

“If all goes well, the risk management runs well, the system is also consistently implemented, and the legal aspects increase, then we can be in a condition which not only follow it but also develop it as a culture,” she said. Humas UNS/Mia/Asl
