UNS – Starting the learning activities in the even semester, the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a general lecture on Monday (24/02/2020) in Sport Venue (GOR) FKOR UNS, Manahan Campus. This event is attended by academic members and students of FKOR from various classes. Student’s enthusiasm to attend the event is high; all the available seats were full and some of the attendants had to sit on one side of the stands.
The theme of the general lecture is the Tips for Academic Success and becoming National Athlete. There were three speakers in the event: Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd as the Dean of FKOR, Berlian Marsheilla (national volleyball athlete), and Nina Gusmita (national wheelchair athletic athlete). Both are graduate and student of UNS.
The first speech delivered by Dr.Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd concerning the Tips for Academic Success. There are three points that need attention to be successful in academic field; stable GPA (3.5), active in student organization, and participated in competition, both inside the campus and outside the campus.
Students need to comprehend that being FKOR students is a challenge. Because many of FKOR students have backgrounds as athletes and still continue their careers today. Therefore, they need to balancing between the learning activities and training to achieve success in both fields during their study. Several tips were given to provide instruction for students.
“After a class, at least you can reread the materials from teachers, at least 10 minutes every day,” said Dr.Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd to the students.
After the speech from Dr.Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd, the following discussion was with national athlete from UNS. Berlian Marsheilla shared her experience from the beginning of her journey as an athlete until now become the part of Volley Ball national team. Berlian Marsheilla has went through a lot of things, one of which is when she had three roles: student, athlete, and employee. This is of course not easy to do these all three, but with a good time management, she succeeded in finishing all the three.
This story attracted an attention from participant who asked how to become a great athlete. Berlian Marsheilla said that someone should never feel that they are a great athlete, even if they have the upper hand. Because when someone feel less than the other, they will keep learning to be better again and again.
Besides Berlian Marsheilla, Nina Gusmita (national wheelchair athletic athlete) also shared her struggle to become a wheelchair athletic athlete until now. Initially, Nina Gusmita is a common student who has interest in sports. This is supported by her mother who likes sports. But because of a disaster Nina Gusmita had to use a wheelchair to support her journey as an athlete.
“At the time, it was hard, I thought that everybody will leave me. But that was not the case, my family, especially my mother, keep supporting and taking care of me until now. My mother accompanied me everywhere. My friends also supporting me and giving me encouragement,” she said. Humas/Ratri
