UNS — The Architectural Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a guest lecture on entrepreneurship online through Zoom Meeting and YouTube stream on Friday (16/10/2020). The Architectural Engineering Program FT UNS invited Ir. Jarot Trisunu, M.M., the Chairman of Indonesia SME Business Association (Ikatan UKM Bisnis Indonesia – IKUBI) and Prof. Marsudi Wahyu K., a member of Board of Commissioner of Telkom.
In his material, Prof. Marsudi discussed the shift in business world post-Covid-19 and how to act to the changes. He stated that the digital world battle has affected various aspects of life. “The digital world including digital economy currently has penetrated various sectors in the world. These sectors are, among others, health, agriculture, finance, tourism, industry, education, to urban planning and people mobility. All sectors facing digital technology now,” Prof. Marsudi explained.
Prof. Marsudi also conveyed that currently, rapid business changes occur to sustain a business in the digital era. There are two categories of business in the current situation, a business that disturbed and reformed by digital technology and those that are not touched by digital technology. In the end, only companies that are adaptive to changes that will survive and win the competition. “The examples of companies which grow rapidly due to the technological changes are Netflix, Grab, and Gojek,” he explained.
Before concluding his discussion, Prof. Marsudi reminded students to be ready to face era 4.0. He stated that the education world needs to be adjusted to this development because, in this current situation, people with high technical skills are no longer adequate. In the future, the university should shape innovators because technical jobs will be replaced by robots or machines. “What machines cannot replace is creativity, thus, education in the future should be directed to the creativity because currently our education shape students into employee mentality,” he added.
The second speaker is Ir. Jarot Trisunu, M.M. who discuss the freedom of trades in the digital era. There will be large opportunities and threats that should be faced by business in this era. The freedom and speed of information are factors that contribute to the business shifts. To face this era, a businessman needs to prepare a strategy for survival, they need to map the threats that they will face. Jarot added that society will always be changing or get bored with a certain thing and have complex wishes. This is a challenge because it demands the business owner to innovate in product and service delivery. “Business owners are demanded to think out of the box to produce unique and unusual products,” Ir. Jarot stated. “But this challenge will bring benefit in the future because the efforts taken by the business owner to keep innovating will improve their knowledge on market and product,” he added. At the end of the material, Ir. Jarot stated that the basis of creative-preneur works is creativity. Creativity will guide a person to start their business concept and execute it into a real business. “All of these should be implemented consistently, focused, diligently, with toughness, and followed by pray,” he concluded.
