UNS — Muhammad Yazid Ar-Rasyid, a student from the Chemical Engineering Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, secured 2nd place in the National Essay Writing Competition organized by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Industrial Technology at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta. The competition, held in late October 2024, brought together young writers from various universities across Indonesia to showcase their skills in scientific writing. After a rigorous selection process, Yazid earned the runner-up title, bringing pride to the Faculty of Engineering at UNS.
The journey to victory began with an initial selection round, where participants were required to submit a title and abstract of their essays. Yazid chose an innovative topic titled “Production of Cellulose Acetate Membrane” with the product name “Celltane.” His essay presented an idea to develop a product capable of purifying dirty or murky water, specifically targeting remote areas in Surakarta that lack access to clean water. By using cellulose-based membrane technology, “Celltane” aims to provide a sustainable solution to meet clean water needs, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation for all.

After passing the initial selection, Yazid advanced to the final round, where he presented the concept and benefits of his “Celltane” innovation to the panel of judges, competing against 10 other finalists from various universities. He confidently demonstrated how “Celltane” could serve as a practical and cost-effective solution to the clean water crisis in rural areas. His compelling presentation captured the judges’ attention, earning him the 2nd place award.
Yazid’s motivation to participate in the competition stemmed from discovering the opportunity through Instagram, which frequently shares information about writing contests. He expressed that the experience was exciting and memorable, providing him with a platform to further hone his writing skills.
“This experience was truly extraordinary. I hope to continue improving my writing skills and developing innovative ideas in the future,” Yazid said, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Friday, (8/11/2024).
Yazid’s achievement was warmly received by the Faculty of Engineering at UNS, including the lecturers and dean, who expressed their pride in his national-level accomplishment. This support also motivated Yazid to keep creating and inspiring his peers.
“I hope my fellow students in the Faculty of Engineering are not afraid to try and never give up. Success often begins with failures that we face with perseverance,” he added.
Through this achievement, Yazid hopes his innovation can have a tangible impact and inspire other students to continue creating beneficial innovations for society. This accomplishment serves as a testament to how dedication and hard work can lead to academic success and contribute to technological advancements in Indonesia.
