UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta inaugurates two new Professors in an Online Inauguration Ceremony on Wednesday (20/5/2020), which coincidence with the ‘Hari Kebangkitan Nasional’. The two professors inaugurated are Prof. Ari Natalia Probandari, dr., M.P.H., Ph.D. as a Professor in Public Health Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr. SpP (K) as a Professor in Pulmonology and Respiratory. Both professors are from the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) UNS.
During the Open Senate Meeting on the Professor Inauguration through Zoom Meeting, which can be accessed by the general public through the UNS Official Youtube account, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho said that UNS is proud with the two new professors, especially because both are from the FK, which has an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic in stopping the infection.
“The presence of these two new professors will add to the number of UNS Professor to 220, where 122 of them are active Professors,” explains Prof. Jamal in his opening remark.
Prof. Jamal adds that the COVID-19 is worth mentioning as a world war, as it is affecting 212 countries with active cases all across the globe on May 19th, 2020, reaching 4.8 million cases with the casualty of approximately 318,000 people. This pandemic is the toughest test, not only for the health team but also for all leaders in the world, because the steps and policies taken will show their expertise.
“If this COVID-19 is a war that we need to win, then, there is no other way except to strengthen solidarity, synergy, and the joint actions of all elements in society to suppress the spread of the virus. As a professor in Medical Science and Public Health, it is appropriate that both of them are motivated to immediately conduct mitigation, collaborative research, and innovation, in order to prevent and suppress the spread of the virus, or even to find the drugs and vaccines, which are effective for curing the COVID-19 disease. This collaboration will be the main strength in living the ‘new normal’ lifestyle, to get accustomed to living in peace with the virus, at least for the current and next few months,” adds Prof. Jamal.
Therefore, academicians need to evolve to follow the big changes that occur. How the academicians are capable to maintain scientific existence and relevance in society, is at stake. Mitigation of COVID-19 pandemic needs to be implemented with collective awareness and new ways of working that are more inclusive, fast, and appropriate in answering the conversation.
“Hopefully, the presence of these two professors will increase the productivity of constructive critical thoughts in the UNS Senate,” added Prof. Jamal.
