UNS — The team of Community Service Program (KKN) on the Theme of Natural Disaster Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta installed simple Early Warning System (EWS) for landslides in Kemuning and Ngargoyoso village, Ngargoyoso sub-district, Karanganyar District, Central Java. The team also installed evacuation route signs along the streets in both villages, especially in Melikan and Sumbersari hamlet on Monday (21/9/2020). To equip the community with the danger of landslides and natural disaster, under the supervision from Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, M.Sc, the team held a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) attended by the representatives of community members and head of hamlets. The FGD discussed the contingency plan in reducing the risk of natural disasters. The event was conducted by applying the health protocols for Covid-19. The discussion consists of a disaster scenario, impact scenario, policy, and strategy until the formation of Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (Forum Pengurangan Risiko Bencana – FPRB).
FPRB itself is a forum formed as an effort to reduce natural disasters risk in disaster vulnerable areas. The forum is structured and consists of coordinator and members who are ready to take the command once disaster hit. In the news release, Dr. Pipit stated that the discussion facilitated by KKN UNS team refreshes community memories on knowledge and disaster learning. Especially concerning contingency and FPRB which is conducted by other parties before KKN UNS team.
“This event is important to improve community capacity in facing landslides. Considering the KKN location is an area which is vulnerable to landslide, we hope with this event, the community can remember the mitigation required in a landslide. Moreover, we will enter the rainy season soon,” Dr. Pipit explained.
Dr. Pipit added that the community from both villages was enthusiastic to participate in the series of events conducted from the beginning of KKN program to the FGD, EWS installation, and evacuation route signages. The community was active and participative in the events which lead to smooth communication between the community, village government, and KKN team. Humas UNS
