UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta signs a Partnership Agreement with the ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd virtually on Thursday (7/1/2021). The agreement manuscript was signed directly by the Chair of Insitute for Research and Community Engagement (LPPM), Prof. Okid Parama Astirin, and Chief Representative of ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd, Bob Soelaiman Effendi.

The partnership between the two institutions covers “Research and Mapping Survey on Community Acceptance Related on the Establishment of Nuclear Power Plant as the Solution for Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Energy to Pursue the Prosperous and Low Carbon Indonesia in 2050.”

This agreement is a follow-up from the signatory of a Memorandum of Understanding between UNS and ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd on August 2020. On this occasion, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho also present during the virtual signatory alongside the UNS Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Kuncoro Diharjo, UNS Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information, Prof, Sajidan.

In front of the university leaders and ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd representative, Prof. Sajidan representing Prof. Jamal, expresses his gratitude for the Signatory of the Agreement. “Today is the follow-up of the MoU between ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd and UNS, which signed by the Rector of UNS and Mr. Bob, in the form of research and mapping survey on the community acceptance regarding the establishment nuclear power plant,” Prof. Sajidan explains.

Further, he reveals that this activity has been planned before, while the model and proposal has been set according to the period term agreed by UNS and ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd.

“We hope this activity will involve many researchers including a partnership between UNS and Universitas Bangka Belitung (UBB). Thus, this will be a U-to-U partnership between UNS and UBB, specifically the LPPM of UBB with the LPPM of UNS,” he continues.

Responding to the opening remark from UNS, Bob Soelaiman Effendi states this Partnership Agreement is a new milestone in the Indonesian nuclear sector. Because this was the first time for the government through the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) RI to recommend a private company.

“Public acceptance is a recommendation requested by the Kemenko Marves on September 2020. We receive this recommendation to prepare for implementation,” Bob said.

Further, ThorCon International, Pte. Ltd that receives the public acceptance recommendation requested UNS to conduct an academic survey on the Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) establishment as a sustainable and environmentally-friendly power source. Humas UNS
