UNS Students Created A Book on Remittance for Household

UNS — The students for Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in a team of Student Creativity Program for Community Services (PKM-M) created a guidebook on the management of remittance in the household for productive activities. Through this work, the PKM-M UNS team won funding from the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) RI.

The team has members from different faculties, Afridah Ikrimah (Diploma Program of Demography and Civil Registration (4 years)), Ilham Bagus Prasetia (Diploma Program of Demography and Civil Registration (4 years)), Beauty Martha Lingga (Agribusiness Program), Mohamad Yogananta (Development Economic Program), and Faris Achmad Baharudin (Management Program) under the supervision from Dr. Ernoiz Antriyandarti from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS.

In the PKM-M program, these students conducted community services activity in Mojorejo Village, Karangmalang, Sragen. This village is one of the productive migrant villages (Desa Migran Produktif – Desmigratif) a program from the Ministry of Manpower which aims to protect and improve the welfare of Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) and their families.

The team leader, Afridah Ikrimah stated that the reasons for selecting the village are because the majority of villagers in Mojorejo works in the agriculture and livestock sectors. But due to the pandemic, their productivity falls which leads to a decrease in their income and purchasing power. Afridah added that the problems that occur in Desmigratif are the poor management of remittance and the consumptive tendencies of the villagers. Therefore, financial planning and entrepreneurial programs are among the few steps to optimize the management of remittance in the household. “However, the villagers do not have sufficient knowledge on how to perform a good financial planning and how to start a business,” Afridah explained on Friday (23/10/2020).

Therefore, the PKM-M UNS Team decided to create a guidebook titled ‘Guidebook for Remittance Management in Household for Productive Activities’. This book is prepared to encourage and motivate the community to perform better remittance management and contains three main materials on financial planning, entrepreneurship, and community-based tourism management. In the financial planning section, the book explained the importance of financial planning, the steps to perform financial planning, and in the appendix, the book provides tables for practising financial planning. The book also explains the importance of entrepreneurship from how to start a business, preparing a business plan, and digital marketing through social media. The last part shortly explains the Community-Based Tourism so that the community can utilize natural resources potential as a tourism destination.

“The book will be very beneficial for the community in remittance management. The book is expected to increase community awareness and knowledge on remittance management so that it can improve community standard of living and welfare,” Afridah stated. Humas UNS
