UNS Bureau of Students and Alumni Held A Coordination for the Selection of MWA from Students

UNS — The Bureau of Student and Alumni (Mawa) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held coordination for the selection of student members of trustee council (Majelis Wali Amanat Unsur Mahasiswa – MWA UM) with the representatives of Student Organizations (Organisasi Kemahasiswaan – Ormawa) online through Zoom Cloud Meeting, Sunday (25/10/2020) afternoon.

This coordination was held as a follow up of the process to establish the new organizational structure after the designation of UNS as a University with Legal Entity (Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Berbadan Hukum – PTN BH) by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), on 6 October 2020. With the PTN BH status, UNS is currently in the process of establishing a component of the new organization, MWA. Based on Article 27 Paragraph (1) PP Number 56 of 2020, students have one seat for their representative as MWA member.

The coordination was led by the Vice-Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs UNS, Prof. Kuncoro Diharjo, assisted by the Head of Mawa Bureau UNS, Drs. Rohman Agus Pratomo. To the representatives from Ormawa, Prof. Kuncoro stated that the university gave Ormawa the right to conduct the selection process for MWA UM. He believed that the MWA UM selection proves can be held openly and democratically. “After UNS got its PTN BH status, it needs a transition period. We need to work promptly and improve the organizational strength in MWA UM because students have one representative,” Prof. Kuncoro conveyed.

The position as MWA member for student representative will be effective for a year and they cannot be reelected for the next year. Prof. Kuncoro explained the duties and function of MWA UNS, such as to approve the proposal of amendment in UNS statute and to stipulate general policy in UNS. The selection of MWA UM member, according to Prof. Kuncoro, need to be done as soon as possible because UNS has completed the process of establishing the Academic Senate (Senat Akademik – SA). Therefore, UNS is asked to submit the composition of MWA to the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) RI, Nadiem Makarim, immediately.

“For the first time, SA as mentioned in Article 94 Paragraph (3) propose the members of MWA to the Minister no later than 3 months after inaugurated.” (Article 95 PP Number 56 of 2020)

In the MWA UM member selection process, some principles need to be applied by the Ormawa, such as upholding the democracy, participative, transparent, accountable, and effective. Prof. added that the plan for MWA UM selection must pay attention to the composition, which means that the selected student must represent his/her fellow students from diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate level. The selection also can be conducted based on the faculty/program by considering the real representation and that it can support the UNS organizational structure.

During the discussion, each representative of the Ormawa, for example, the Student Executive Board (Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa – BEM) UNS and UNS Communication Forum (Forum Komunikasi – Forkom), took a role to deliver their suggestion and viewpoint on the selection of MWA UM member. Ormawa UNS will conduct a selection for candidate and election process openly by involving all elements of UNS students. After the coordination, Prof. Kuncoro conveyed that he is waiting for the election result. “Thank you. I hope for your suggestion to complement the plan of this policy,” Prof. Kuncoro concluded.
