UNS Students on Herbal Medicinal Needs: Maximize the Use of Family Medicinal Plants in Salakan, Boyolali

UNS — The hybrid Student Community Service Program (KKN) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta for January – February 2021 does not limit student spirits and innovation to serve their designated villages. Team 110 KKN UNS held a gotong royong to maximize the cultivation of Family Medicinal Plants (Toga) in Salakan Village, Teras Subdistrict, Boyolali District on Monday (22/2/2021).

The event was held in collaboration with the local community under Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group. This program aims to maximize the function of the existing Toga in the village by fixing the planting media and adding new medicinal plants and vegetables. The plan was initiated because the village Toga has not fully utilized and has limited varieties.

“Thus, we want to invite Salakan people through PKK group to be more aware and independent in maintaining Salakan Village in the form of Toga,” Ernia Rahmawati as Team 110 KKN UNS leader explained.

Ernia and her team cleaned Toga yard and handed out new plants such as orange, lemongrass, and ginger. The team also educates Salakan people on the benefits of each plant to maintain the immune system. They cleaned up the environment to reduce the media for mosquitoes’ breeding habitat.

“Besides cleaning the yard, we also decorate it with colorful planting media. We educated the people on the benefits of the plants,” the student of Javanese Language Education student added in an interview between her KKN activities.

The chief of PKK Group in Salakan Village, Devi, stated that they highly appreciate the KKN UNS students’ program. “We are thankful for the program from UNS students. Hopefully, this program can improve community independence in managing Toga Yard, and they can get the benefit (from the plants,” Devi stated.

The series of events were concluded with Toga Yard’s opening by the Chief of Salakan Village PPK Group to be maintained and utilized. The program is expected to benefit the community in fulfilling their needs for herbal medicines. Humas UNS
