UNS Students’ Responsiveness in Helping Jakarta Floods Victims

UNS — The students of the Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, as part of Team 7 of the Student Community Service (KKN) Program, deliver assistance to flood victims in Jakarta, Saturday (20/2/2021) afternoon.

The assistance was delivered after the KKN UNS Team 7 received the news on floods disaster that affects certain regions in Jakarta. The floods were caused by heavy rains starting from 01.00 AM until 06.00 AM. “The heavy rain causing many flood spots in Jakarta, among other is the RT 004/RW 001 Ulujami, Pesanggrahan, Jakarta Selatan. The area was flooded reaching thigh-high of adults and is submerging many people’s homes” explains one of the team members, Muhammad Alif Alauddin.

The student of Sociology Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS, states that the UNS students, who resided near to the affected regions, provide some aids in the form of instant noodles, diapers for baby, tea, and coffee, to the victims.

“We received news from RT 004/RW001 group that the residents are affected by the floods. Immediately I contacted my colleagues to collect funds to buy the necessities needed by flood-affected residents. We got the news in the morning and the following afternoon we handed the aid. Alhamdulillah, we still have time and I hope our help is useful,” he added.

Alif states that the aid was handed to the Head of RT 004/RW001, Wiji Slamet. Wiji Slamet expressed his gratitude to UNS students for the assistance given. He states that the assistance given shows attention, a form of alertness, and responsiveness to the flood disaster that befell the residents in RT 004 / RW 001.

“Thank you very much to UNS students, who have been alert and responsive to the flood disaster that hit RT 004. The assistance that has been delivered through me will soon be distributed to the affected community, hopefully, it can be useful for the victims,” Wiji Slamet explains.

Other than delivering the aid, Alif Alauddin and the team members also monitoring the flooded area. He states that until 17.50 WIB the flood has not subsided and the height is still thigh-high of adults.

“We saw there are many Environmental Hygiene Implementing Unit (UPK), Sanitary Office and Water Management Office, who clean the garbage from the culverts. Some of the residents’ houses are still flooded and residents have difficulty finding clean water for washing, baths, and latrines,” he concluded. Humas UNS
