UPT UNS Library Held a Workshop on Mendeley-Based Reference Management

UNS – Unit of Integrated Services (UPT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Library held a workshop on ‘Mendeley-Based Reference Management’ in UPT UNS Library Seminar Room, Thursday (27/2/2020).

On the occasion, the workshop participant got a detailed explanation of the definition and the manual on how to use Mendeley exclusively. Mendeley developed by Elsevier is a program for computers and websites that can be used to manage and share research papers. Besides that, Mendeley can also be used by teachers and students to search for research data.

Opening the workshop, the Head of UPT UNS Library, Burhanudin Harapan, Ph.D., stated that the workshop aims to help students and teachers, especially to face the final assignment.

“Hopefully, with the participation from bachelor, master, and doctoral students, and the academic members in this workshop can help in preparing a final assignment,” Burhanudin Harahap said.

In front of the workshop participant, Burhanudin also explained the background of the Mendeley workshop selection held by the UPT UNS Library. He stated that Mendeley is a system that is easy to use and can be accessed anywhere and anytime.

“Mendeley is a system that combined citations and references that can be accessed through the internet. Thus, Mendeley can be used anytime and anywhere as long as there is an internet network that can be utilized,” he added.

Present as the speakers were Haryanto, S. IP., M. IP and Tri Hardian Satiawardana, S. T., M. A. Haryanto delivered a speech on ‘The Mendeley Citation and Reference Manager Application’

“Mendeley is selected for several reasons. One of which is in scientific writing, we found that the citation is often different from the reference. It is a problem when the reference has a larger number than the citation. There is also citation made by seeing other’s writing but not the source. If the citation is wrong, it will become a systematic mistake. That’s why there is Mendeley software to reduce plagiarism,” stated Haryanto.

To the workshop participant, Haryanto stated several reasons why people are using Mendeley. The reasons are the support for notes and highlights, multi-platform, mobile device support, collaboration, data repositories, community support, Mendeley career, Mendeley funding, and support for 2 GB of storage capacity. For these reasons, users can easily manage the reference and facilitate users to make citations/quotations and references. Humas UNS/ Yefta
