Wedangan IKA UNS Series 116 Discusses UNS Transformation and International Reputation

UNS – The 116th series of the Wedangan Ikatan Keluarga Alumni Universitas Sebelas Maret (the Universitas Sebelas Maret Alumni Association, or IKA UNS) was held to strengthen communication between university leadership, lecturers, and alumni. This session focused on the challenges of higher education in the digital era and UNS’s strategic plans to enhance the quality of education and research. The discussion occurred virtually via Zoom Meeting and YouTube Live on Friday evening (22/11/2024).

The speakers included UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si.; Vice Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si.; Vice Rector for Resources, Prof. Dr. E. Muhtar, S.Pd., M.Si., CfrA.; Vice Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.; and Vice Rector for Planning, Collaboration, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, emphasized the significant challenges faced by higher education institutions in Indonesia adapting to the changing times and preparing a competitive young generation. He underscored that UNS must transform into a more adaptive and relevant institution capable of addressing societal challenges through skill development and collaboration.

“The strategic plan for 2024-2029 aims to strengthen autonomy and elevate the university’s global ranking. Achieving this requires the support of all stakeholders. Integrated digital information systems are crucial to equipping students with digital skills and mindsets, which are expected to enhance UNS’s academic effectiveness,” Prof. Hartono said.

Vice Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, added that UNS is committed to improving educational quality through international-standard accreditation and program development. This includes creating digital learning resources and fostering partnerships with academic institutions.

“UNS focuses on research and innovation to enhance educational quality and international visibility. These strategies will help UNS compete with top universities worldwide. Plans include launching double-degree programs and collaborating with other institutions, domestically and internationally, to improve graduate competencies,” Prof. Fitria explained.

Vice Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, highlighted the continuous rise in UNS student achievements across various fields, from sports to technology. He emphasized the importance of collective support to sustain these accomplishments. The Directorate of Alumni and Entrepreneurship is also gathering data on distinguished alumni to boost accreditation, which is expected to positively impact UNS’s reputation.

Discussing UNS’s international reputation, Prof. Irwan noted significant progress in rankings over the past few years. For instance, UNS’s position in QS Asia Rankings improved from 401-450 to 221. He reiterated the university’s commitment to achieving its vision of becoming a world-class university through increased visibility and global performance.

“Currently, UNS ranks fourth in achieving key performance indicators among PTNBH institutions. Maintaining and improving this position poses challenges. The 2024-2029 strategic plan includes structured development of facilities and data integration to enhance accountability and efficiency,” Prof. Irwan stated.
