UNS Search and Rescue Assisted the Search of SMP N 1 Turi Sleman Students

UNS – The information on the misfortune that befalls the students of SMP Negeri 1 Turi Sleman in river exploration activity on Friday (21/2/2020) spread rapidly in the media. According to the update in @bakorlak_uns Instagram account, 257 students that consist of grade 7 and 8 students participated in the river exploration activity. Unfriendly weather and heavy rainfall in the upstream area increase the water volume in the Sempor river to overflow. The overflow came suddenly from the upstream area and hit students who were performing river exploration. Six students were found dead.

Search and Rescue Disaster Response Field Coordination Agency (Bakorlak Disaster Response SAR) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta sent a team to join the search operation on SMP N 1 Turi Sleman students who drowned in the river exploration activity. Under the coordination of Herman Andrianto as the commander, the SAR UNS team consists of eight members sent to the location of the incident. Together with the National Search and Rescue team of Yogyakarta (BASARNAS DIY), SAR DIY team, and other volunteers, SAR UNS performed the search operation.

“After we updated, in this search operation there are a total of 249 students of SMP N 1 Turi that were drowned in Sempor river, 239 were safe and 10 students were dead (and were missing),” explained the public relation of SAR UNS Team, Sholahuddin Al Ayyubi to uns.ac.id.

For two days, the search operation was performed to find 10 missing students. On the first day, two more students were found dead. In total 8 students were evacuated by the team. The search operation was continued until Sunday (23/2/2020) and the last two students were found in Dam mantras, about 400 meters from the Scene of Disaster (TKM). Two victims were brought to the Bhayangkara hospital DIY for further identification.

Through the release on Bakorlak SAR UNS social media on Sunday (23/2/2020), SAR operation in Sempor river was closed, after all, 10 students were found. The team involved in the operation returned to each task.
