UNS – A faculty member from the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Ahmad Adib, PhD., shares the tips on establishing the creative industry in a webinar held on Tuesday (23/6/2020). The webinar entitled “Challenges and Opportunities in Universities’ Innovative Startups” also invited experts from various universities in Indonesia. Ahmad Adib states that Indonesia has a huge potential as a capital in developing startups, which includes the creative industries.

“The huge potential and variety of resources possessed by Indonesia is a great opportunity that is not possessed by other countries. Ethnic, cultural, linguistic, human resources and many others, are the main key,” he explains.

In establishing a new business, planning, or design is needed. This can be done through a business plan, as mentioned by Ahmad Adib. “There is quite a lot planning need to be done, one of them that is very important, we must know the consumers (part of the community which is predicted to have purchasing power) of goods or service,” he revealed.

A new business needs to completely understand the development and changes in consumers’ behavior, thus the product offered is not only meet the business owner desire, but also the consumers.

“The condition where the product sold or the established business is not in line with our interests is not a problem, most importantly our products are needed by consumers. In this matter, collaboration in many fields is needed in order to complement each other. The more daring the cooperation with various relevant fields, the better. So ideally the first thing you should have is the mindset of being an entrepreneur, managerial skills, and Marcom,” he added.

The founder of Lestude Creative Startup Center, which operates in more than ten businesses, also conveyed the importance and strategic prospects of the creative industry. “Creative industry has a social-economy impact, one of them is to creating jobs, where there is currently a greater number of unemployed people and very little vacancies,” he states.

Moreover, the creative industry also acts as the nation’s identity, through this creative industry the national identity can be established while introducing the strength of our product to the international market. “We must be able to struggle during difficult times. Greetings, productive, creative, and positive thinking,” he concluded. Humas UNS/Bayu/Dwi
