UNS – The Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Engineering (FT), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a scientific discussion through the KIT (the Scientific Community in Engineering). KIT is a scientific group that had just initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology in FT UNS BEM. During the discussion held on Thursday (16/7/2020), KIT FT invites Atina Rahmawati, an Outstanding Student from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS 2019.
During the discussion through Google Meet, Atina explores scientific writing in the form of an essay. She explains that there are three parts of an essay, namely introduction, content, and conclusion. “In the introduction, there must be a background of the problem, ideas, and current conditions. Furthermore, relevant theory and data are needed to strengthen the argumentation. In the content, the argument should be backed up with facts and the data, should provide information regarding the subject. Diagram, table, concept map, and design can be added to this section. Lastly, in the conclusion or closing, should contain the conclusion, suggestion, and final comment. So, we are not allowed to add more argument in the final section,” she explains.
Moreover, the article must be presented logically, systematically, objectively, and ethically. Ideas can be obtained from literature review and experience. Atina also explains that the title must represent the whole content of the article, is descriptive and informative. “Aside from the title, the best writing method can be done by visualizing and providing an explanation as detail as possible. Then it must be interspersed together, data and references that strengthen argumentation and using reversed-conical thinking flow. So you have to be courageous to show your work as the most appropriate solution in overcoming the problem,” she adds.
One of the committee, Muhammad Farhan Abrar from the Chemical Engineering Study Program, mentioned that this event is the first activity of KIT to hone writing skills. “The objective of this scientific discussion is to improve and develop insights in scientific writing, especially essays. In addition, it also aims to increase networking with speakers who are more capable in writing, as well as delivering a useful event during the quarantine,” explains Farhan. Humas UNS
