UNS — The student of Vocational School (SV) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta who initiate the utilization of Bandeng (Chanos Chanos F.) Bones waste as active material in the production of lotion won the 2nd place in Halal Patika Scientific Writing Competition (Karya Tulis Ilmiah – LKTI), Saturday (19/9/2020). In the competition held online by the Institute for the Study of Food, Drugs and Cosmetics, the Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia – MUI) DIY, the UNS team consists of Putri Indah Nurani, Astri Hidayati, and Diah Ayu Mustika Sari who submitted a paper titled “Ocicha Lotion: Innovation of Collagen Rich Lotion from Bandeng (Chanos Chanos F.) Bones Waste”.
The Team Leader, Putri, explained that the idea to utilize Bandeng bones waste comes from their wish to extract collagen from halal animals to be used in lotion production. Through this invention, they also want to invited Muslim people in Indonesia to use a halal cosmetic. There is a high waste of Bandeng bones, 12% of the waste created from this fish has not fully utilized. “So far, it is only used in the production of cracker and cookies, we are as students from the Diploma Program in Pharmacy initiate this lotion to reduce Bandeng bones waste in Indonesia. By using Bandeng bones in cosmetic production, it will increase the economic value of the wastes,” Putri explained.
Based on the environmentally friendly concept, the SV UNS students also use recyclable glass as primary packaging to reduce plastic waste in Indonesia. To uns.ac.id, Putri stated that they also want to increase the Pharmaceutical elegance that they initiated in an exhibition held by Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. In the exhibition, they created ointment from Bandeng bones. Under the supervision from Apt. Dian Eka Ermawati, M.Sc, the three students have prepared their paper from July – August and were announced as a finalist on 14 September. The finalists were asked to send a representative for a presentation and question and answer session, which made them divide the tasks. As preparation, they have a mock presentation with their seniors.
In the interview, Putri also mentioned her hope that their hard work will bring a good name for the UNS and Diploma Program of SV UNS in particular. They also want to inspire their fellow students to use their skills and step out of their comfort zone by setting time for joining competitions, do not focusing in academic grades, and to always try new things. “Creating an innovation which hopefully can be an inspiration for a better Indonesia,” she concluded.
