UNS — The Students’ Association (HM) of the Environmental Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, organizes a webinar on Ozone protection. The event is organized through Google Meet on Saturday (19/9/2020). The webinar entitled Navigate invites two speakers, namely Ismail Alhabib, the Executive Director of Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) for Central Java, and Diky Wahyudi Lubis from National Geographic Indonesia.
In his presentation, Ismail explains that the greatest contributor to ozone depletion is the increase of vehicles this is related to the usage of fossil fuel. “Transportation sector contributes to 27% of ozone depletion, while the energy sector, especially electricity and heating, contributes to 61%. This number is quite high, considering that most electrical production uses coal. The production process in the Electric Steam Power Plant is causing great pollution. The industrial process, including motorized vehicle production, also contributed about 31% of the causes of ozone layer depletion,” he explains.
Ismail mentioned several steps that can be implemented to save the environment, which involves many stakeholders such as community, government, and private sector. “It can be started from ourselves and the surrounding environment. For instance, maximizing community-based environmental awareness and collaboration from various stakeholders and maximizing the planting of pollution-fighting plants. Moreover, managing waste properly and stopping the habit of burning waste, maximizing urban forests, and saving energy and switching to renewable energy,” Ismail explains.
The second speaker, Diky Wahyudi Lubis, states that environmental problems are the responsibility of the humans as inhabitants of the earth. It is because humans take materials available on earth, and everything that is consumed by humans will decrease faster than naturally. “We need to maintain the continuity, need to maintain quality, quantity, and sustainability. Maintaining quality means that we should discuss the current human behavior in treating the waste. Global warming is also triggered by open dumping or landfills. One of the waste that becomes the main problem is plastic waste,” Diky reveals.
Before concluding his presentation, Diky shares several steps to maintain the earth’s condition, such as dumping waste in its designed place, sorting waste according to type, saving electricity usage, and not wasting food. Additionally, reducing the usage of disposable plastic, planting trees in the surrounding environment, using public transportation, and using recycled items, are some of the actions to do to save the earth.
