UNS — Another accomplishment in debates competition was made by the students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in AMOEBA 2020: Antimicrobial Awareness Debate Contest and Webinar. This event is a virtual debate competition celebrating Antimicrobial Resistance Week 2020.
Under the supervision of Wuyi Anggraini as the supervisor for UNS Student English Forum (SEF) Student Unit, the team consisted of Steven Leonard (Medicine Education Study Program, 2019), Sekar Khoiri Nismara (Civil Engineering Study Program, 2019), and Jericho Julius Prabowo (International Relations Study Program, 2020), succeeded winning the 3rd champion. When contacted by uns.ac.id, Steven who represents his team members reveals that they are happy with this accomplishment.
“Extremely happy, our hard work finally paid off. Because this competition is in collaboration with the WHO, FAO, USAID, and Kemenkes,” Steven said, Saturday (12/12/2020).
The competition is organized by the Center for Indonesian Medical Students’ Activities (CIMSA), a national medical student association affiliated with the International Federation Medical Student Association (IFMSA). The AMOEBA 2020 was conducted virtually through Zoom Cloud Meeting, which separated into several breakout rooms for each debate session on Friday-Sunday (20-22/11/2020). Steven admits that he and his team members are interested to hone their debating skills because this competition uses the Asian Parliamentary system. Meanwhile, they were used to the British Parliamentary system.
“We are interested to enhance our skill, especially because this competition uses the Asian Parliamentary system and because Sekar and I, who previously had an experience in NUDC, usually follow the British Parliamentary system. We are also interested to learn about anti-microbial resistance and how to implement one health approach in overcoming this problem,” Steven explains.
The UNS team needs 1 (one) month in preparation to face AMOEBA 2020. Even though they can win as the 3rd champion, they reveal a rather challenging situation when competing in AMOEBA 2020. “The competition is rather strict because there are many participants who were joining KDMI and even those who won as the best speaker in KDMI. Moreover, because the topic of the debate is focused on health, livestock, and agriculture, our team members, who initially from the engineering and international relation study program, face difficulties in presenting arguments and motions, thus it takes longer time,” Steven said.
In the future, the team hopes that there will be more people who are aware of the importance of microbial resistance. “Hopefully, there will be more people who are aware of this matter and how important microbial resistance is. One of the steps we can make is by finishing the antibiotics drugs prescribed by our doctor. As for debating, we hope that there will be more students interested in competing in the debate championship,” Steven concluded. Humas UNS
