UNS – International recognition had once again been achieved by chemical engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. Recently, Farhan Adisa, Zidan Insa Fauzi, and Ihsan Hafiz Salim won 3rd place in the International Plant Design Competition Derrick 2023.
This competition was organized by the Akamigas Energy and Minerals Polytechnic (PEM) at the end of September 2023. The competition encourages students’ innovation and creativity in designing a detailed plant, starting from market analysis to the feasibility of implementing the design based on economically viable calculations.
In this competition, Farhan and his team designed an environmentally friendly and low-emission ethylene plant that uses biomass as an alternative raw material, besides natural gas or other non-renewable materials.
“The motivation for designing this chemical plant was that we observed that the conventional ethylene production process has higher carbon emissions compared to the plant we intended to design. Additionally, we noticed a substantial demand for ethylene in Indonesia, which is why we decided to design this plant,” Farhan explained as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id, Wednesday (18/10/2023).
Upon announcing that they had won third place in the competition, Farhan expressed his joy. “I was personally thrilled when we were announced as third-place winner. Even though we haven’t succeeded in getting first place, we hope to improve the imperfections and that more UNS representatives will win championships in this competition,” he concluded. *HUMAS UNS*
