UNS– The medical technology sector continues to advance rapidly, with one of the latest developments being the introduction of a new imaging device: the 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital in Surakarta has introduced this advanced technology to enhance the quality of diagnostic services for various diseases that cannot be detected using conventional equipment.
Prof. Dr. Hartono, M.Si., Director of UNS Hospital, explained that the 1.5 Tesla MRI is a medical imaging technology that uses a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves. “With a 1.5 Tesla magnetic field strength, it produces more detailed and higher resolution images of the body’s internal structures, including the heart, brain, spine, joints, and other organs. These imaging results help doctors establish more accurate diagnoses,” Prof. Hartono stated on Wednesday (10/7/2024).
Tesla measures magnetic field intensity, with higher intensities yielding more detailed imaging. The 1.5 Tesla MRI at UNS Hospital offers high resolution, enabling better visualization of anatomical tissues and structures. This facilitates early detection of diseases or abnormalities that may be difficult to see with lower-strength MRI technology, leading to more precise treatment processes. The 1.5 Tesla MRI also conducts scans faster than conventional MRIs, minimizing patient discomfort and increasing time efficiency.
“The 1.5 Tesla MRI does not expose patients to radiation as it uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves. Additionally, it is equipped with various support facilities prioritizing patient safety, such as magnetic shielding in the MRI room, walk-through metal detectors, health history screenings, and competent healthcare professionals to conduct examinations,” Prof. Hartono added.
The noise generated during MRI procedures is also reduced, as the 1.5 Tesla MRI is equipped with Silence Scan software, particularly beneficial for brain scans, along with Acoustic Reduction Technology (ART) software. Its elegant design provides patients with peace and comfort during the scan.
Dr. Habibie Arifianto, SpJP(K), M.Kes., FIHA, a cardiologist at UNS Hospital, highlighted the unique offering of cardiac imaging services using MRI, the only such service in Central Java and still rare in Indonesia. Other cities with cardiac MRI facilities include Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung, and Yogyakarta. With this service, residents of Solo Raya and Central Java no longer need to travel far for cardiovascular MRI examinations. For conditions like coronary heart disease, the MRI can determine if a patient needs a stent or heart surgery, thus avoiding unnecessary procedures.
“For other heart conditions, doctors can accurately diagnose the causes of heart failure or rhythm disturbances, allowing for more precise treatment. The 1.5 Tesla MRI establishes UNS Hospital as the most comprehensive cardiac diagnostic center in Solo Raya,” Dr. Habibie remarked.
In other areas, MRI can assist doctors in visualizing spinal, brain, gastrointestinal, and muscle issues more effectively. Tumors can be assessed for size and tissue content without surgery, and spinal nerve compression can be precisely measured, indicating the optimal timing for surgical intervention. This enhances the accuracy, speed, and efficiency of treatment and care.
UNS Hospital’s introduction of the 1.5 Tesla MRI is part of its commitment to raising healthcare standards in Solo Raya. Patients who have undergone 1.5 Tesla MRI scans at UNS Hospital reported positive experiences, with short wait times and clearer results. This technology also aids doctors in making more precise diagnostic and treatment planning decisions.
While the 1.5 Tesla MRI offers numerous benefits, it also requires substantial investment and specialized operational skills. UNS Hospital is committed to continually developing and improving its infrastructure and medical expertise to maximize the benefits of this technology for the community.
By adopting the 1.5 Tesla MRI, UNS Hospital reinforces its position as a leading healthcare center that prioritizes not only treatment but also innovation in medical technology for the well-being of its patients. The 1.5 Tesla MRI marks a significant milestone in the evolution of healthcare services in Indonesia, transforming the approach to diagnosis and treatment for a brighter and healthier future.
