UNS — The Mandarin Language Center (PBM) or Confucius Institute at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Surakarta, has once again made a remarkable achievement, being named among the top 20 videos in the “Global Costume Talent Show”. This recognition was part of a creative video competition featuring the themes “Global Traditional Costumes” and “Global Signature Foods.”

The event was organized to commemorate International Mandarin Language Day 2024 by the Sinolingua Language Cooperation and Exchange Center and the Chinese Language Alliance. It drew participation from 66 countries with over 300 video submissions and more than 2 million likes from viewers in 132 countries worldwide.

The submissions featured stories about traditional costumes and local Chinese culinary culture, narrated in Mandarin by learners and enthusiasts of Chinese culture from around the globe. The event promoted cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding, fostering international friendships through the medium of culture.

The deadline for video submissions was April 2024, then an extensive review by experts and judges, combined with online views and likes, and the winners were announced on September 25, 2024. Awards were given to the top 20 videos in the “Global Costume Talent Show” and the “Global Food Talent Show” categories.

UNS was represented by Wahyuning Sri Widowati, B.Ed., a lecturer at PBM UNS. The winning video featured a Mandarin-language Javanese song titled Jawa Makmur, composed by Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., Head of the UNS Center of Excellence for Javanology. “The costumes showcased included traditional Javanese kebaya and batik attire styled with elements of traditional Chinese clothing. The video was filmed at various locations, including the UNS Javanology Center, UNS Lake, Vastenburg Fortress, Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace, and Kauman Batik Village,” Wahyuning explained on Friday (18/10/2024).
