UNS— Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, through its Green Campus and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Subdirectorate, presented the 2024 Eco-Friendly School Award to several elementary schools in the Solo Raya region. The award ceremony was held in person at the Madukara Room, UNS Inn, on Friday (18/10/2024).
This award is part of the UNS Green Campus and SDGs Subdirectorate’s efforts to raise environmental awareness within the education sector, particularly in Greater Solo. Before the award, the UNS Eco-Friendly School Award team conducted outreach to multiple elementary schools. A total of 109 schools expressed interest and registered for the competition.
“The UNS Eco-Friendly School Award is one of the activities of the Green Campus and SDGs Subdirectorate aimed at promoting environmental quality efforts in our surroundings. Following our outreach in July 2024, we received 109 registrations. After a selection process based on the collected evidence, 12 schools were chosen to receive awards in the gold and silver categories,” Dr. Agung Hidayat, S.Pd., M.Sc., Chairman of the organizing committee, explained.



UNS Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. officially opened the event. He emphasized the importance that UNS places on green initiatives, campaigns, and SDGs achievement.
“Achieving the SDGs, promoting green initiatives, and driving green campaigns are crucial aspects of our programs. Not only do we aim to make UNS a green campus, but we also want our green initiatives to inspire SDG awareness in the education sector, particularly in Greater Solo. It is essential to introduce environmental issues to young students, starting from elementary schools,” Prof. Irwan said.
Prof. Irwan also expressed hopes that the award program will expand in the coming years, reaching not only the education sector but also other organizations, particularly in the Solo Raya region. He encouraged schools to maintain close collaboration with UNS for future support and guidance.
The 2024 UNS Eco-Friendly School Award in the Gold category was presented by Prof. Irwan and Imelda Kemara Indah, Head of the Functional Office of Bank Jateng UNS, to SD Negeri 2 Ngenden, Boyolali; SD Kristen Widya Wacana Jamsaren, Surakarta; SD Negeri Sambirejo, Surakarta; SD Negeri Kroyo, Sragen; SD Negeri 02 Plumbon, Sragen; SD Negeri 01 Nglorog, Sragen; and SD Islam Terpadu Az Zahra, Sragen.
Meanwhile, the Silver category award was presented by Dr. Ir. Murtanti Jani Rahayu, S.T., M.T., Head of the UNS Green Campus and SDGs Subdirectorate, to SD Negeri Sabranglor, Surakarta; SD Negeri 04 Karangasem, Surakarta; SD Negeri 01 Karangpelem, Sragen; SD Muhammadiyah 01 Ketelan, Surakarta; and SD Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah, Sragen.
“We are extremely grateful and proud of this award. It signifies not only recognition but also our commitment to providing a green learning environment. This award motivates us to continue teaching valuable lessons to our students, particularly in fostering environmental care,” the Principal of SD Negeri 2 Ngenden Boyolali said.
