UNS – Biotechnology Study Group of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on ‘Reach an Achievement through Biotechnology Research’ through Google Meet application on Saturday (25/7/2020). The event was attended by around 50 participants and invited the alumnus of Biologi Program FMIPA UNS, Prista Kusumaningtyas H., S.Si, and the alumnus of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Anwar Fauzi Rakhmat., S.Si. as speakers.
This webinar aimed to facilitate Biologi Program FMIPA UNS students in developing scientific thinking and to prepares students to join the Student Creativity Program (PKM) or research grant on biotechnology research. Anwar Fauzi Rakhmat stated that the topics in biotechnology research are, among others, environment, energy, food resilience, and health. Research idea is vital in building research. The idea can be generated from idea exploration, information, focus, keep on track, research question, and many other methods.
The point concern of biotechnology research is the utilization of genetic science in developing GMO and designing baby, that is applied to genetically modified products such as transgenic plants, stem cell, and testing. Researchers are also required to study the implication of their study, what is the impact of their study on the existing industries while considering the funding and pricing of the final products.
Anwar also conveyed that in solving the problem concerning research funding, students can apply for PKM. Some institutions and firms fund student’s research such as the Tanoto Foundation. Students can join a competition that provides funding for their research. the second speaker, Prista Kusumaningtyas shared about the means of generating ideas in research in her study concerning lung cancer analyzed from patient’s urine samples.
“In researching collaboration, there are ethics that you need to pay attention on, for example, you need to prepare the idea, ask your supervisor’s suggestions on the objectives and output of your study, prepare an agreement on author and job description, check similar project research, discussion on research costs and the responsibility of each research member,” she explained.
Prista also highlighted that students need to prepare a weekly progress report and daily logbook when conducting research. Humas UNS
