UNS – As a preparation for the university representative to National University Debating Championship (NUDC) to the regional level (LL Dikti Vl) before entering the national level, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an open selection for all UNS students in three days, from Friday (24/7/2020) to Sunday (26/7/2020). The selection is conducted online through the Zoom Meeting application.
The NUDC applies British Parliamentary System in which a team consists of two speakers and each debate attended by four teams that compete as the Opening Government (OG) and Closing Government (CG) who support the motion and Opening Opposition (OO) and Closing Opposition (CO) as the party that refuse or disapprove the debate. In the internal NUDC selection, many teams represent faculties and independent participants. In this occasion, the teams take the name of viruses such as Rubella, H1N1, and Varicella Zoster. The assessment was performed by nationally accredited juries in the debate, Ayudhia Ratna Wijaya, S.S. from Postgraduate Program in Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Ruth Yuliana Salim from the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) UNS, and Garin Frige Janitra from FK UNS.
In the first and second day, the selection process selected 6 teams that will enter the semifinal round. The teams that passed this stage are Varicella Zoster, SMADAV, Ciguatera, Slytherpuff, Rubella, and H1N1. From the six teams, SMADAV and Varicella Zoster have the right to take part in the final round because they get the highest points. After a discussion among the juries, four teams were selected to enter the final stage: SMADAV, Varicella-Zoster, Ciguatera, and Slytherpuff. On Sunday (26/7/2020) or the last day of NUDC selection, the final round was broadcasted through @minalwa_uns Instagram account and @sef11maret. In this round, SMADAV took a role as OG, Ciguatera took a role as OO, Slytherpuff as CG, and Varicella Zoster as CO.
The final result placed Slytherpuff in the first place. The team consists of Steven Leonard and Livy Febria Tedjamulia. SMADAV which consists of Muflih Dwi Fikri and Ela Octafiyani won the second position, Varicella-Zoster which consists of Fatiha Najma Yustisia and Zalfaa Azalia Pursita won the third position, and the fourth position was won by Ciguatera which consists of Benedict Posma Theophilius and Rendy Putro Pamungkas. The representative for UNS will be selected from the best speakers; Steven Leonard, Livy Febria Tedjamulia, Benedict Posma Theophilus, Rendy Putro Pamungkas, Fatiha Najma Yustisia, and Sekar Khoiri Nismara, who will go into another selection to determine two best speakers who will represent UNS and one person as N1 Adjudicator.
The event was concluded by Wuyi Anggraini as the supervisor of Student English Forum (SEF) UNS who stated that debating skill has high benefits for a student’s life. Humas UNS
