KKN UNS Students Assist Boyolali People Installing Clean Water Network and Ecobrick Production

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students in the Student Community Service Program (KKN) installed clean water supply and conducted ecobrick production training in Sukorame Village, Musuk Subdistrict, Boyolali District, Central Java.

The team installed clean water installation support on Monday (22/2/2021). This program is selected because people in Sukorame Village cannot access clean water service from the Local Water Company (PDAM), and they also experienced clean water shortage during the rainy season. The program was implemented by Team 105 KKN UNS by creating a tool to process water river into clean water.

“For some of Sukorame villagers, clean water during the rainy season is a need that third to meet,” a member of Team 105 KKN UNS, Merlita Fitriani said.

Merlita Fitriani added that the supporting water installation structure was built in RT 001/ RW 001, Duren hamlet, Sukorame Village. During the process, the students were assisted by local people. The village which Tri Ayu Dania Utami, Miftahul Fitria, Mohammad Angga Saputro, Mohammad Raihan Hafiz, Mira Evita Hidayat, Muh. Habib Amrullah, Rosyid Assidiq, and Merlita Fitriani servicing rely on the river water as the only water source for their daily needs. This condition is mainly caused by the village’s geographical condition, which is located in the highland. Therefore, the villagers cannot make a well because of the deep groundwater surface.

The water installation program was implemented after Team 105 KKN UNS received a story from the chief of RT 01, Mr. Tulus, who said that the villagers experienced a water problem. A water installation is a form of their services for the community. Besides the installation, the team also conducted training on eco brick production to solve plastic waste issues in Sukorame village and turn it into a valuable product. The training explained the definition of eco-bricks and its production process to create a chair. Participants were also divided into small groups and made a small chair for each group.

“The program was attended by the representatives of village PKK members held on 11 February 2021. We also invited a student from Craft Arts (Textile Design) Program UNS, Mira Evita, as a speaker,” she added.

Merlita Fitriani also explained the tools needed during the training, including plastic bottles, plastic waste, liquid white glue, newspaper, brush, spray paint, and foam. In this training, the speaker used paper prints to decorate participants’ chairs. “One chair needs seven solid eco brick bottles, weighted around 250 grams for 600 ml bottle. And we hope that this event will increase the community’s interest in utilizing eco brick well and to open new business opportunities,” Merlita concluded. Humas UNS
