UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students never stopped contributing achievements for their beloved university. This time a team of Faculty of Law (FH) UNS students who competed in the Constitution Debate Competition for Indonesia University Students XIV 2021 brought home the 1st prize. The Team won over their rival from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) in the final round held by the Constitutional Court (MK) RI in Four Season Hotel, Jakarta, Thursday (25/11/2021).
The FH UNS Team consisted of Oktafiyana, Gresia Putri Damayanti, and Salwa Husna Sekai Suryawi from Law science Program FH UNS 2019. The Team went through great challenges to win over 138 teams from universities across Indonesia. One hundred and twenty-six passed the first selection, and 24 teams were then elected to compete to reach the best two teams for the final round. UNS and USU became the finalists.
Salwa, a team member, shared the struggle that her Team went through to the uns.ac.id on Sunday (28/11/2021). She stated that the Debate is a highly prestigious competition for FH students in Indonesia. Although the registration was considered easy, they needed to go through the initial selection at the FH UNS level by the Faculty of Law Debate Community (KDFH) UNS to determine the best representatives for FH UNS. She also added that they had a short preparation period due to the registration. But the Team still managed to do their best. “Such as preparing documents or collecting materials from various sources like journals, consultation to supervisor, alumni of KDFH UNS, and other KDFH managers on the motions that will be used,” Salwa said.
The Team also participated in a mock debate with assistance from KDFH UNS mentors and was assisted by the KDFH UNS research team for the document preparations. The greatest challenge for the Team, Salwa said, is preparing the sound argument in a short time. They also need to make a video to present their essay without any mistakes. The selection process was held based on the essay and this video presentation. FH UNS Team succeeded to the next stage. In the elimination round, they compete with UIN Raden Intan Lampung and Universitas Tarumanegara. Again, they succeeded and went to the quarterfinal round with Universitas Udayana, which they won over with a final score of 4-1. In the semifinal, they fought Universitas Syiah Kuala that won as the 2nd winner in last year’s competition.
“Alhamdulillah, we won and went to the final round,” Gresia, another team member, stated. Gresia also explained that after the semifinal, they started training for the final promptly.
In the final round, their Debate with a team from USU discussed the regional quarantine/lockdown during the peak of COvid-19 infections, which they also won and made them the winner of the championship. They hoped that this achievement would enrich their knowledge, train their self-capability, and inspire other FH UNS students to have a champion mindset.
“Our hopes are to enrich knowledge and train ourselves to continue to develop and make KDFH UNS, FH UNS, and UNS proud,” Oktafiyana, another team member, said. Humas UNS
