UNS – Student Scientific Discussion (Studi Ilmiah Mahasiswa – SIM) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held the fourth Scientific Discussion (Diskusi Anak Ilmiah – DAI) under the theme of Getting Yourself a Scholarship for A Student Exchange Abroad and Beyond, Saturday (13/6/2020) through Google Meet application. This discussion invited Angelo Abil Wijaya the winner of Erasmus scholarship at University of Glasgow, the United Kingdom in 2017.
The discussion was opened by Prof. Eddy Heraldy as the advisor for SIM UNS. The Professor of Chemistry Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) UNS, appreciates the event held by SIM UNS. “I expect that UNS graduates can continue their study abroad. This, of course, requires early preparation,” Prof. Eddy explained.
On this occasion, Angelo explained how to win a scholarship for exchange program. In joining an exchange, there are several requirements that need to be prepared, for example, documents, study plans, and statements of purpose. Documents have an important role in applying for the exchange program, such as, GPA, IELTS result, and all documents in the requirements. The study plan covers the objectives to be achieved during the exchange and need to be prepared as detailed as possible to convince the interviewers.
After the documents are taken care of, the next stage is the interview. Angelo stated that the interview should not be something that scares us. “Interview should become a place to show the applicant’s added values to the interviewers. During the interview, try to describe the positive results that can be achieved. Self-confidence is important but does not appear to be arrogant and overconfident of your abilities,” explained Angelo.
There are strategies before applying for exchange from Angelo. Firstly, prepare yourself as early as possible, a makeshift preparation might result in disappointment. The second strategy is to select a good campus with reputable programs. Consistency is also needed to achieve objectives.
“Your biggest enemy is not other people, your biggest enemy is yourself,” Angelo conveyed. Humas UNS/Zalfaa/Dwi
