UNS — Students from Electrical Engineering Program, M Raihan Hafiz and Sayyida Assyifa from Chemical Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta together with the students from the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) UNS, Muhammad Rasyid Ridho created an innovation of Urine Glucose Detector based on Internet of Things (Glukiot) as Early Detector of Diabetes. Under the supervision of Feri Adriyanto, Ph.D from Electrical Engineering Program FT UNS, this Student Creativity Program (PKM) passed the selection to join the 33rd National Student Science Week (Pimnas) 2020.
Muhammad Rasyid Ridho stated that his team raised this theme because of the increasing diabetes cases in Indonesia. Additionally, according to the International Diabetes Federation, 382 million people suffered from diabetes in 2013, but 175 million of them are undiagnosed. The collaboration among the three different programs resulted in a design involving the expertise of three professions. This collaboration aims to produce a tool to detect glucose levels in urine promptly, accurately, and to save the data in the form of patient medical records connected to an Android Smartphone via IoT.
“There have been studies that measure body glucose level noninvasively, especially through urine. However, no research has measured the glucose level in urine using electrochemical analysis of fixed potential amperometry principle, in which the possible score is still obtained from linear sweep voltammetry analysis technique, so that accurate results can be obtained,” Rasyid explained, Wednesday (25/11/2020).
Considering that urine contains many other elements besides water, a large number of data is required to obtain accurate results. “That’s why we use machine learning method with Bayesian approach that will be implemented in the Glukiot system,” Rasyid added.
The collaboration between the UNS students won IDR 5 million PKM 2020 grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud), the Republic of Indonesia (RI). They hope that Glukiot can help patients with diabetes to detect their illness earlier. “So that the illness can be detected before complication occurs,” he concluded. Humas UNS
