The Chief of PPM FEB UNS Explained the Novelty and Doctoral Competence

UNS – The Chief of Management Development Center (Pusat Pengembangan Manajemen – PPM) Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Dr. Ahmad Ikhwan Setiawan explained the novelty and doctoral competence in a webinar on Building Novelty in Management Dissertation hold by PPM FEB UNS on Monday (6/7/2020). The event runs for three hours through Zoom Meeting application and YouTube live stream.

Dr. Ahmad Ikhwan Setiawan stated that the community always presented with the phenomena in literature books. It is without a doubt that scientists are meritorious in revealing these phenomena and analyze and explore the topic. If a phenomenon is studied by many researchers and then disseminated through a scientific paper, a conclusion and solution can be drawn. Scientists then generated theories which are a conclusion from past phenomena.

In building a theory, the researcher refers to the expert at the time in terms of opinion and ideas. Living in the millennial era provides us with a wide range of phenomena to be explored and analyzed, including concerning Covid-19. Dr. Ahmad conveyed that the relationship between the theory and what takes place in the field is not always linear. There were times when discrepancies occur and a phenomenon do not agree with the existing theories. This discrepancy is the opportunity for the researcher to study the new problem and provide an update to the theory when it cannot solve the phenomenon, and this is a mine from doctoral students because they are expected to enrich and provide a contribution in the form of new concepts.

He added that novelty in a dissertation is vital because there is a discrepancy between reality and theory development. For example, in the development of e-toll, we are presented with the question of whether the ‘place’ in the marketing mix; product, price, promotion, place; is still relevant.

There are stages in building a new concept, research gap, phenomenon gap, theory synthesis, problem formulation and solution, theoretical or empirical model, and identification of new variables characteristic. Humas UNS
