UNS – The Marching Band of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta secured a remarkable victory at the 2024 Indonesia Drum Corps International, bringing home 14 trophies. The prestigious competition was held at Benteng Stadium in Tangerang from Thursday (1/8/2024) to Sunday (4/8/2024).

This international championship, organized by the Indonesia Drum Corps Association (IDCA) in collaboration with Drum Corps International (DCI) of the United States, saw participation from teams across several countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the host nation, Indonesia.

The UNS Marching Band triumphed over more than 30 teams from around the world, earning 14 trophies across three categories: Soundsport, Drum Corps World Class, and Flag Ensemble. The awards included 2nd Place in Soundsport Challenge Class; 3rd Place in Drum Corps World Class; 3rd Place in Flag Ensemble Challenge Class; 3rd Place for The Best Drum Major (Drum Corps); 3rd Place for The Best Music (Drum Corps); 3rd Place for The Best Visual (Drum Corps); 3rd Place for The Best Percussion (Drum Corps); 3rd Place for The Best Brass (Drum Corps); 3rd Place for The Best Front Ensemble (Drum Corps); 2nd Place for The Best Music Performance (Soundsport Challenge Class); 3rd Place for The Best Visual Performance (Soundsport Challenge Class); 3rd Place for The Best Overall Impression (Soundsport); 2nd Place for The Best Drum Major (Soundsport); and 2nd Place for The Best Costume (Soundsport).

Under the guidance of their coach, Likha Sari A, S.Sos., M.Soc.Sc., the UNS Marching Band sent 61 performers, 34 officials, and coaches to the competition. They presented a theme titled “The College,” which depicted the challenging yet rewarding life of university students who balance academic responsibilities with the pressures of exam preparation. Despite the obstacles, their perseverance culminates in the proud moment of graduation. This theme was inspired by UNS’s vision and mission of becoming a World-Class University.

Coach Pujiyono highlighted the team’s preparation period, noting that they had only five months to prepare for the championship, whereas most marching bands in Indonesia typically require about a year of preparation.

“Even with such a short preparation period, the team managed to hit their targets during practice, which ultimately led to our victory, achieving a score of 93,50,” Pujiyono said on Monday (12/8/2024).

Despite the challenges of not having participated in competitions for five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the support from the university, along with the dedication of the coaches, officials, and managers, enabled the UNS Marching Band to make a strong comeback and achieve this significant accomplishment.

“Looking ahead, we hope that the UNS Marching Band will continue to excel in various national and international championships,” Pujiyono added.
