UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students in the Entrepreneurship Student Creativity (PKM-K) team from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) proposed an idea for a t-shirt with comic series on Indonesian endemic animals based on character smart card. The t-shirt is presented as a solution for literacy issues and successfully secured PKM incentive from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) 2021.
This team consists of Sony Baroo Amirulloh from Fine Art Education Program, Siti Fatimah and Azzahra Nurhidayati Ni’mah from Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program (PBSI), and Ersa Arifiyanti Guidance and Counseling Education (BK). The team was supervised by Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd., a Fine Art Education Program faculty member. Sony explained that the background of their idea is the concern over criminal actions that trade near-extinct endemic animals.
“Indonesia is rich with biodiversity, including endemic animals. Its uniqueness becomes an attraction. However, it is also attracted illegal activities from irresponsible parties who trade rare animals and threatened its continuity,” Sony explained.
The team was inspired to use endemic animals as character education objects for children while teaching about Indonesia’s richness, the endemic animals. The idea also supports the digital literacy program by applying technology and achieve university student’s creativity. The proposed idea was successfully developed into a quality comic based on a character smart card for character education that can be accessed through a smartphone.
“There are two outcomes, comic t-shirt and character smart card characters education comic and endemic animals education that can be accessed through a smartphone,” Sony added.
With these products, Sony and his team targeted students in preschool and elementary school as their marketing target through student’s parents. He added that the benefits of these products are assisting students, parents, teachers, and governments in performing character education and knowledge for students on the endemic animals through exciting media.
