UNS Holds Ceremony to Celebrate 78th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a ceremony for the 78th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) on Thursday (17/8/2023) at the Courtyard of the UNS Rectorate Building. Various traditional costumes from different provinces were worn by university leaders, adding a colorful touch to the UNS rectorate courtyard.

The ceremony, led directly by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., was attended by the UNS academic community, including the teaching staff, education staff, administrative staff, the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) association, and students. The Pancasila text was recited by the Chair of the Academic Senate (SA), Prof. Dr. Sri Sulistyowati, dr., Sp.OG. (K)., while the 1945 Constitution text was read by the Chair of the Council of Professors (DP), Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D.

The remarks of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudritesk), Nadiem Anwar Makarim, were delivered by Prof. Jamal. In his remarks, Nadiem Makarim mentioned that with the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, both students and educators now experience freedom in learning and teaching. This freedom has been felt in more than 250,000 educational units across Indonesia.

Furthermore, at the higher education level, the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) programs have successfully transformed the lives of over 760,000 students. The opportunity to study beyond the campus, whether in industries, schools, or within the community, contributes to the nation and country.

“Our efforts in promoting Merdeka Belajar in the last four years increasingly demonstrate the importance of collective action in realizing freedom within Indonesia’s education system. To move forward, we must continue to progress. Let’s carry on the spirit of our predecessors to continuously work together to realize freedom of learning,” Prof. Jamal said in delivering the Mendikbudristek’s speech.

Prof. Jamal, as the Rector of UNS, also welcomed the participation of international students in the ceremony. These international students come from 16 countries and are studying at UNS. After the ceremony, the UNS academic community together witnessed the final round of a singing competition held at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium.
