UNS — The students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta created illegal logging detector called Legator which is an acronym for Illegal Logging Detector. The tool designed by three students, Alvin Ichwannur Ridho and M. Maulana Yusuf from Electrical Engineering Program 2017 and Farah Yuki Prasetyawati from Physics Education Program 2018, utilized Long Range Technology as its main technology.

Under the supervision of Agus Ramelan, S.Pd., M.T as a Faculty Member in the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, this innovation won funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) Republic Indonesia (RI) worth of Rp 5 million through Student Creativity (PKM) of 2020. In an interview with uns.ac.id team online, Alvin Ichwannur Ridho as the representative stated this tool is developed to support government efforts in preventing and solving forest destruction as mentioned in the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 18 of 2013.

Besides, Alvin and team see if the current usage of technology still has several weaknesses such as the observation that cannot be conducted real-time, weather is a factor that usually becomes obstacles as well as the operator. This reason made Alvin and team created Legator as a preventive tool to guard the forest from illegal logging.

“The superiority of Legator is displaying real-time data. Then it is environmentally friendly because it uses energy source from the sun and can be operated without considering weather conditions,” Alvin explained, Thursday (24/9/2020)

Further, Alvin stated that currently, he and his team are preparing themselves for monitoring and evaluation that will be conducted in early October. Intense communication is conducted with the supervisor to prepare their presentation. The agenda in October will become a deciding moment for the team that has won the funding. The team who passed the presentation will obtain a ticket to the next round, the National Student Science Week (Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional – Pimnas) 2020.

“We hope that we can go to Pimnas and later our tool can be realized and brings positive impact for the community especially in term of forest protection from illegal logging,” Alvin added. Humas UNS
