UNS – Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a talk show to promote awareness on the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS) within the campus environment. The event was held as part of the peak celebration of the 24th anniversary of DWP, the 95th Mother’s Day, and the 2023 National Social Solidarity Day with the theme “The Strategic Role of Women in Sustainable Development.” The talk show took place at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium on Tuesday (19/12/2023).
Budhi Widjajanti Jamal Wiwoho, S.E., the Chairperson of DWP UNS, expressed that the rapid development of technology has led to incidents leaning towards sexual violence. This often causes disharmony within society, prompting DWP to engage in discussions, provide insights, and seek solutions to address sexual violence within the campus environment.
“This morning’s event is a form of socialization for PPKS and to find solutions to the issues that arise in society according to Minister of Education and Culture Regulation No. 30 of 2021 regarding PPKS in higher education. In this good opportunity, let us carefully follow the presentations from the speakers who will strengthen the spirit to actively participate in PPKS through the DWP campus friend program,” explained Budhi Widjajanti.
The talk show featured several speakers, including the Chair of the UNS PPKS Task Force and Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS, Prof. Dr. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, M.Si., and Lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology UNS, Arif Tri Setyanto, M.Psi., a psychologist.
Prof. Ismi explained the material about what sexual violence is, why sexual violence is questioned, and how to address sexual violence. Currently, sexual violence is crucial to address as it can occur anywhere and anytime, and the perpetrator can be anyone.
“Sexual violence is like an iceberg phenomenon because there are many victims who dare not speak up, and there are always those who blame the victim for the incident,” explained Prof. Ismi.
Prof. Ismi added that there is no tolerance for sexual violence, and one must have the courage to reject it. The main task of the PPKS Task Force is to support university leaders in creating a safe and comfortable campus. DWP UNS can network, educate, socialize, and communicate effectively with the PPKS Task Force to collectively eliminate sexual violence, especially within the campus environment.
Arif Tri Setyanto, M.Psi., a psychologist, also spoke about protecting against sexual violence through the role of the family. He explained that children depend on parenting and the roles performed by parents.
“To bring up great and well-protected children in the future, parents must strive as much as possible in their role in the family by setting a good example for their children,” said Arif. HUMAS UNS
