UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, along with 21 other universities in Soloraya, made a declaration for peaceful elections. The declaration took place in the courtyard of dr. Prakosa Building, UNS, on Friday (29/12/2023).
There are five points conveyed in the declaration, led by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum. The first point is to realize elections that are direct, general, free, secret, honest, and fair.
The second point is to respect differences of opinion and political aspirations without degrading the dignity of others. The third point rejects all forms of violence, intimidation, hate speech, and hoaxes based on ethnicity, religion, race, and intolerance, as well as radicalism during the election process that could damage peace and harmony in society.
Furthermore, the fourth point is to make elections a moment to strengthen Indonesian democracy and create a responsive, transparent government capable of realizing the welfare of the people. The fifth point is to submit and comply with all provisions of the prevailing laws and regulations.
In this peaceful election declaration, UNS invited 21 Rectors of both public and private universities in Soloraya, along with student representatives. “We agree that the implementation of the 2024 elections and the ongoing campaign stages in Indonesia proceed peacefully and smoothly. Universities in Soloraya hope that the elections can be conducted honestly, fairly, and with maintained security. We, from the 21 universities, agree to make this peaceful declaration,” Prof. Jamal explained.
Prof. Jamal also emphasized that both public and private universities in Soloraya are ready to maintain the neutrality of lecturers and educational staff in every activity.
“Both public and private universities in Soloraya are ready to provide facilities for election socialization activities, whether in the form of talk shows or other socialization events. We are ready to be neutral and not lean toward any candidate or party,” Prof. Jamal affirmed.
The Rector of Universitas Slamet Riyadi (Unisri) Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Sutoyo, M. Pd., who attended the event, expressed support for the peaceful election declaration. “As academics, wherever we are, we have an obligation to successfully carry out the elections, and this is the responsibility of all of us. We, from private universities (PTS), fully support the peaceful election declaration,” Prof. Sutoyo said.
Several universities in Soloraya invited to participate in the peaceful election declaration include Unisri Surakarta, Universitas Surakarta (Unsa), Universitas Tunas Pembangunan (UTP), Universitas Veteran Bangun Nusantara Sukoharjo, Universitas Sahid Surakarta, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Surakarta, Universitas Duta Bangsa Surakarta, Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta, Universitas Islam Batik (Uniba), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) AUB Surakarta, Universitas Aisyiyah Surakarta, Sekolah Tinggi Manajemen Informatika dan Komputer (STMIK) Sinar Nusantara, Universitas Nahdhatul Ulama, Universitas Kristen Surakarta, Poltekkes Kemenkes Surakarta, Universitas Setia Budi (USB), and Akademi Komunitas Industri Tekstil dan Produk Tekstil.
